Tonight, around 5:40 PM, I visited your store with my mother and had an incredibly disappointing and upsetting experience. We purchased a backpack, pencils, and folders. While we were at the register, everything seemed fine at first—until a manager intervened. The manager looked my mother, a woman of color, up and down in a way that felt judgmental and disrespectful. They then interrupted the cashier and proceeded to search the backpack we were purchasing, claiming it was “protocol.” This was unnecessary and demeaning, especially since the backpack was displayed right next to the registers. To make matters worse, this happened in front of other customers, making the experience even more humiliating and embarrassing. When it came time to pay, we used two different cards. While processing the second card, the cashier rudely asked, “Is that even your card?” This remark was highly inappropriate, implying that we were being dishonest. Throughout our time in the store, we also noticed staff following us and lurking nearby, which made us feel targeted and unwelcome. The treatment we received was blatantly biased and unprofessional. I recently had a disappointing experience at my local store regarding their passport photo printing policy. Despite presenting a standard 4x6 print containing passport-sized photos – a format widely accepted and easily produced from home or online – the store refused to deliver the prints, citing a policy against printing “passport photos” arranged in this way. This policy makes little sense and feels unnecessarily restrictive.

Such practices are anti-consumer. Many customers create 4x6 sheets with passport photos specifically to save money and time, given how inflated prices can be for “official” passport-size photo services. By denying prints in this format, the store essentially forces customers to pay excessive markups, unfairly limiting their options and access. There is no legitimate legal reason for blocking 4x6 prints just because they contain multiple passport-sized images; it’s merely a tactic to safeguard their expensive passport photo services at the expense of customer convenience.

I urge others to be wary of stores using these restrictive and questionable policies. It’s important for businesses to support, not stifle, customer needs and transparency. I created a legal document for someone and went to this Staples to print on parchment style paper. Upon arrival, I logged into the computer to retrieve the document from my email. I printed on white paper first as a test of quality. My wife went to the counter to ask about the parchment paper. Three employees stood there talking for five minutes before acknowledging her presence. Meanwhile, I’m being charged by the minute. My wife explained what she wanted and handed her the whole tray on parchment style paper. She took four sheets and walked over to the printer. The older lady walked over and watched me put the paper in the printer tray and she walked away. I printed, paid for the computer and prints, and stood up.
