At first, I thought it was nice that Gainesville had a Russian/European store. However, when I went to get some groceries, I was greeted by an unfriendly dog that seemed ready to snap at me as soon as it heard a command. It appeared to be a German Shepherd or a mix. I hesitated to even open the door and had to get the owner's attention before I could enter. It took her a while to get the dog behind the counter, and during that time, the dog was quite tense. While it didn't bark or show its teeth, it was clearly on edge, waiting for a command.
I usually don’t have issues with animals, but I’m cautious around those that exhibit a hostile demeanor. I quickly grabbed a few items and checked out. When I asked if the dog was usually present in the store, she replied, "Yes, you didn't know? This dog has been in the store for the last 5.5 years." Given that, I assumed nothing too terrible had happened despite its aggressive appearance. I suggested, "Maybe a sign is needed to indicate that the dog is friendly." She responded, "The dog is for security reasons due to homelessness. Once a woman tried to scam me, and the dog reacted based on my reaction. Also, I don't recognize you, and you seem new. If you have any traumatic experiences with dogs, I can put the dog behind the counter."
At that point, I was confused as to why she assumed I had past experiences related to dogs during my visit to her store. While I don’t have problems with animals that are not a threat, it’s common sense to be cautious when a dog clearly shows signs of aggression. She failed to assess the situation from a customer-oriented perspective, making it feel as if I was asking for a favor in her home. Overall, after this interaction, I decided this would be my first and last visit to this...
