I started collecting Pokemon cards a few months ago. As a supporter of local card shops and a live long resident of Garden City I knew about A to Z so I decided to support them by buying majority of my collection there. A spent well over $500 there with decent customer support until May of 2014. I went there to sell some ultra rare cards from the latest set and we were unacknowledged by Mary (the woman who does the buying of Pokemon cards).
When I told I was interested in selling some cards she immediately responded with a negative attitude "Good luck." I took it as a sign she wasn't interested in buying cards from me so instead I began to check out their merchandise. After a minute of me looking into their glass display she then looked up from what she was doing and commented. "Well, I can't look at the cards if they are in your backpack."
My boyfriend and I played both rude comments off and showed her my cards I was interested in selling. The entire time she was pricing the cards she was curt, rude, and very disrespectful several times. When my boyfriend decided to get a price on one of his cards she rolled her eyes and said she wasn't interested at all in the ultra rare full art pokemon fan club that just came out in the new set less than a week ago. Then a few minutes later said she would take it for seven.
I bit my tongue just wanting to get over with the whole experience. All the prices where fair but her attitude was sickening. The icing on the cake was when Rich the owner walked up during the pricing. I thought he was going to help us and maybe confront Mary for being extremely rude to us but instead he walks up and insults me and my boyfriend saying "Oh its the inbred brothers!" Then walked away as if nothing bad happen saying "Mary is giving me the evil eye." and over to the corner counter on the other side of the store. I quickly sold her two of my cards and got out in a hurry after she practically threw the money at me from the register.
I will never be going back. I have never felt so unappreciated as a customer or so insulted by a business in my life. I suggest, unless you are going there to buy something specific because other places don't have the item, that you just...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've known Mike for many years, and have had maybe a hundred deals over the years. What you see is what you get: a no nonsense, funny, honest guy who loves what he does and takes care of his customers. The same can be said for Rich, as well as the rest of the staff. I feel blessed to be able to call Mike a friend, and I wish him and his family massive success. He's a phenomenal father, and no amount of adversity has ever made him be anything less than a loyal, loving person. If you haven't been lucky enough yet to do business with him or spend any time at the family store, do yourself a favor. I haven't always been the greatest friend, but I'd do anything for him and wish everyone there the very best. There should be a thousand 5 star reviews on here, because they are an essential part of the Garden City/Westland community, and anyone else would have closed shop by now. But Mike and Rich are fighters and they care about the community too much to walk away. Sportscards aren't anywhere close to as popular as they were 15 years ago, the system is set up for the mom and pop's to fold up. But that's exactly why we all need to support them, to show these card companies we NEED our local stores to stick around, otherwise how do we pass the love of the hobby onto our children? I wish them great success, and I hope I see them again someday. Give them a try, I promise you won't regret it. Unless you're a jerk to them, in which case go to Target or Meijer and see how...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreImpressive store with a good diversity of product, clean, well organized, but it felt like they actively didn't want me to spend money when I came in.
Asked a staffer about a product, was met with a blunt "No."
I followed up asking if they anticipated having any and was met with "We have an event tomorrow, so I don't know if there will be any left over."
I wasn't aware the store was hosting an event so I expressed interest in the event, and was told again "Yeah, we're having it tomorrow." with no other information or invitation to sign up.
It was a really weird experience, and I'm totally willing to chalk it up to a bad day, or too many people asking the same question, it's the reason the review is two stars instead of one, but I don't see myself returning, first impressions and all that.
If you're looking for comics, cards, or coins, check this place out, hope you have a better experience than I did.
Edit: I appreciate the reply from the owner, and I did come through again, there were different employees there, and they were both friendly and receptive to questions.
I amended my rating from 2 to 4 because...
