The apartments are small, but nice enough, with the exception that the bathtub showers have weird half-doors instead of curtains. The location is also wonderful - the town is gorgeous and time people are lovely.
However, the real problems are all surrounding service issues. Let me list some:
No mailboxes at the complex, so you have to get a po box. As a result, all manner of businesses will tell you your address does not exist (to their credit, this is true for the entire town. Not really a Bighorn issue specifically)
You are required to use a horrible "ISP" called 3DB Networks. All residents must pay them, even if you somehow manage to get internet from somewhere else (address doesn't exist, remember? You can do it, but it's a pain). Not only do you have to use these guys, they hardly ever answer emails or phone calls. If internet goes out (which is not uncommon, especially during winter) then you don't even have a way to know if they're aware of a problem, let alone get in touch to see when it will be fixed. When I moved in I was promised internet was reliable, because I work from home. They lied. In reality it is weather dependent, generally unreliable, and you have to deal with a third party company that gets paid the same whether they help you or not. Fun fact, you can't even forward your own ports. I had to call them to get that done, and the first two people there I spoke to didn't even know what I was talking about. (Update: xfinity now services the building. Their internet is great and reliable, which makes it even more annoying that I still have to pay 3DB. I added a star to the review for this, and will add another if they drop this horrible vendor)
You are forced to use smart locks from a company called latch. Their app is mediocre at the best of times. (Update: app is more reliable now. I still don't like it, but it is factually less broken. This also earned them another star)
Apartment management has an email, but they ignore it. Instead you have to contact them through another app called active building
Active building itself is a dumpster fire. There are many problems but my personal favorite is this: when you type messages to staff, your keyboard opens over the text field so you can't see what you're typing while you type it. This is the other vendor I really wish they would drop.
No air conditioning. In a recently built complex, they have no air conditioning. Opening windows is an effective option, but it's also loud as the location is very windy and next to a highway. This will bother some people more than others, but for me it's a big problem. I work from home and the noise can get picked up on my microphone if I leave the window open. Instead I got a swamp cooler...
Read moreWasn’t given a key, and the “fancy” latch key access thing died twice while I was there and there was no way to contact the “emergency” maintenance number reliably. It flooded from the apartment above twice and both times the maintenance guy didn’t even show up to check on it ever and just put non reproducible on the maintenance docs, I have/had video proof of just water pouring in from the ceiling. Still nothing was done, there’s probably tons of black mold everywhere (there definitely was plenty of other black colored mold), as they didn’t clean the mess and neither did I. Still to this day have no idea why or what caused it. Honestly, most of my bad experiences came from the maintenance guy, although the office did try to terminate my lease a day early and I had to call to be able to pay even though it was before the deadline. I never forgot that one either. Very emotionally draining and extremely stressful and I didn’t even get an apology. Our back sliding door exploded overnight while my roommate and I were asleep and cracked. It took them over 6 months to fix that as the door was on “back order” for that long. They didn’t make us pay for it which I was dreading/expecting. Honestly just a very stressful and confusing time. I know this isn’t on the apartment complex itself but the upstairs neighbors had a fascination with what I can only assume was dragging furniture at 1am, 2 am, and 4 am most nights. Oh, and I almost forgot the weirdest part the light switches were leaking as well, maybe it was just my specific bottom floor apartment. But it was genuinely very weird I did somehow get most of my deposit back though,...
Read moreAre you looking for an apartment that's small, overpriced, and falling apart? Then this is the place for you! Living here will give you great views of the mountains and your neighbors not picking up after their dogs. You'll also get to experience the luxury of a brand new apartment that doesn't have air conditioning. Don't worry, you can leave your windows open for a wonderful breeze that will pull in tons of dust into your home from the dirt surrounding the complex. If you're lucky enough, you may be able to score one of their bottom floor units with a history of flooding! My unit was on the second floor and my sink fell off of the wall, so additional bonus there! You can use as much water as you'd like because they charge a flat rate of $75 per person/month in your unit. You'll also get access to the community wifi which is unstable :) The modern bathrooms are great with their clear half door so you can watch yourself shower while spewing water all over your floor. Check out their website for photos of literally half a door on their showers. Yes, it's on purpose. When you join the Facebook group community, you'll see posts including things like photos of apartments walls with floor to ceiling cracks which seems to be in the majority of units. Living here was like a dream, and not a good one. The best part about...
