One of the first things I do when visiting a new destination is look for a well-reviewed, guided tour. This helps orient me to the place I’m visiting, provides historical and cultural context for attractions on my itinerary, and often yields “insider” tips on restaurants, etc. In Savannah, there are basically two choices: Genteel & Bard, which offers 4 different tours, and Free Savannah Walking Tours. Multiple emails to Genteel & Bard went unanswered, so we booked the 1:00pm “Historic Savannah Tour” with Free Savannah Walking Tours – and thoroughly enjoyed one of the best “free” walking tours we’ve ever experienced. I was surprised to learn that our meeting location (Johnson Square) was the auction block for enslaved Africans. Our Free Savannah Tours tour guide failed to mention this. Upon arrival at the Andrew Low House, our tour guide alluded to Andrew Low being a 'bad husband', but never elaborated on the statement. I later discovered on the Geechee tour that this was because Andrew Low fathered seven children by his enslaved cook. I can only imagine the other information I may have missed.
If your desire is learn TRUE Savannah history, I would not recommend this tour. Do Ms. Pat's Geechee...
