One of the first things I do when visiting a new destination is look for a well-reviewed, guided tour. This helps orient me to the place I’m visiting, provides historical and cultural context for attractions on my itinerary, and often yields “insider” tips on restaurants, etc. In Savannah, there are basically two choices: Genteel & Bard, which offers 4 different tours, and Free Savannah Walking Tours. Multiple emails to Genteel & Bard went unanswered, so we booked the 1:00pm “Historic Savannah Tour” with Free Savannah Walking Tours – and thoroughly enjoyed one of the best “free” walking tours we’ve ever experienced. Our guide, Chuck Norras, was knowledgeable, witty, and kept our group moving at a steady, but comfortable pace. Free Savannah Walking Tours also offers a 10:30am tour which, if you’re visiting during the summer, might be your better option.

We are visiting the Savannah area and signed up for the Free Savannah Tours. We booked based on reviews and unfortunately for us we just weren’t overly impressed. My first suggestion is for the tour guide to be mic’d. It was hard to hear our tour guide making it hard to engage in the tour. The 1.5 hour tour spent about 30 minutes moving around the central monument at Johnson Square. Two of us in our group are teachers and had a difficult paying attention. We ended up leaving about an hour into the tour and headed back to our car. I wish we would have had a better experience given the reviews we read.

Signed up the day before, booked online - cost was $15 for a family of 5 (reservation fee). We showed up at Johnson Square about 10 minutes early, and our tour guide Joe was there waiting for us. We were the only people in the tour (May 27), so it felt like a private tour. Joe was knowledgeable, personable and engaging. He obviously knew his history, and mixed in stories and kept our kids entertained. It lasted about 90 minutes, we ended at Forsyth Park. We tipped Joe $55 (so $70 total cost) which we felt was generous considering the circumstances. Would highly recommend this company!

Family and I went on the Sunday tour and Chris did an awesome job. He even kept our teenagers entertained. It started from Johnson Square at 12pm and ended at the fountain in Forsyth Park at about 2pm. It's a really easy walk; about .8 miles with plenty of stops.

Couple of minor things: I wish it would have started a little earlier or a little later. We were starving by the time it was over. There are plenty of restaurants in the area to choose from.

I would have liked it to include more landmarks. I realize that would have increased the walking distance. Chris covered a lot of history and included famous people and monuments but I did miss hearing about some of the historical landmarks in the area other than...

I initially thought this was a great tour...until I experienced Ms. Pat's Gullah Geechee tour. A lot of information was left out. I was surprised to learn that our meeting location (Johnson Square) was the auction block for enslaved Africans. Our Free Savannah Tours tour guide failed to mention this. Upon arrival at the Andrew Low House, our tour guide alluded to Andrew Low being a 'bad husband', but never elaborated on the statement. I later discovered on the Geechee tour that this was because Andrew Low fathered seven children by his enslaved cook. I can only imagine the other information I may have missed.

If your desire is learn TRUE Savannah history, I would not recommend this tour. Do Ms. Pat's Geechee...
