STYLETTE Hair Studio — Local services in Hawaiian Gardens

I found this place on Yelp because of its raving reviews and checked out Director Yop Kim's instagram beforehand...seeing his 476 posts of great haircuts (several show a trim with some layers and curtain bangs, making me think he's an expert on this) is what made me decide to book my appointment with him. I don't believe those posts are real.

Yop was late to the appointment and kept me waiting multiple times throughout my haircut to goof around, taking sudden breaks here and there to let his assistant take over while charging me the full $100 before tip for a director's cut.

His assistant hastily washed my hair without any conditioner or massaging. I asked Yop for input/suggestions on my hair because a director should provide a quick consultation at least, but he just asked me for a reference photo and my thoughts instead of giving me his. So, I suggested curtain bangs and layers. I even showed him the style from one of his own instagram posts, but he barely looked at it before readily agreeing.

He curled my hair after cutting it in an attempt to hide the unevenness in the back and nonexistent layers. I reiterated that the plan was layers and curtain bangs because he'd barely cut any and it was difficult to see how my hair actually looked with everything curled. He started cutting again, but at this point I just wanted to wash my hair so I could see how it really looked. Turns out my bangs were very short and uneven, only on the left side of my forehead...

Everyone who saw my hair when I got home didn't even notice I got a haircut. I have to tie up my hair now and try to hide my choppy half-bangs because that's the only way I can make it look decent. Since he cut the bangs very short, I have to wait it out and can't even get them fixed. So frustrating.

I just wanted a trim with some layers and curtain bangs. The end result looks nothing like the photos I showed him. Won't be returning and...

This was one of the worst hair cuts I have ever gotten. I got my hair cut by Caroline and right now all I want to do is cry. I told her multiple times specific things about how I like my hair cut which were COMPLETELY ignored.

I said 1) do NOT feather my bangs -- I really hate the look of them feathered and much prefer them blunt 2) I have VERY thick hair and wanted a short cut. When it is layered too much it gets poofy so I requested MINIMAL layers. Guess what she did? She feathered my bangs and layered my hair to hell and back. And of course because my hair is thick and everything lifted after it dried my hair is now not only much shorter than I asked for, it also looks like my head is a circle and I have a bowl cut from the front.

When I got home, my mom told me that it looks worse from the back and, sure enough, I checked and the layers were not even done well. They are choppy, uneven, and not in the least blended.

I don't know if the hair cut I asked for was beyond her skill level or there was some major miscommunication between me and the hair stylist. If it was the former, I wish she would have just told me to come back another day so I different stylist could cut my hair. If the latter and there were things that were unclear, I wish she would have just asked me clarifying questions instead of just going to town on my hair and pretending like she knew what i wanted.

I do not trust this salon at all to understand what the client is looking for. Maybe she's good at cutting hair that SHE likes. If you are looking for a simple trim or something maybe STYLETTE is suited for that but I would never return here even for that.

I gave the owner my feedback and got NO response. Awful cut and awful...

The true rating is for 4.5 stars but let's round up. I have been to this studio since 2023 and I'm so glad I discovered it through IG.

I feel like they do a good job trying to replicate the picture of how you want your haircut to be. I used to go to Amie for my cuts but felt that Sue suited me a bit more. Both are great hair technicians though. I found Sue through IG and texted her to coordinate my appointment but the website is also good for scheduling your hair appointment.

They did open a new location in Buena Park as well. Love my haircut and very chill vibes...
