This was an awesome place for a special night out. We decided to go on a short road trip just to get away for the weekend. Found this place in Hico and decided to try it for dinner. It's not easy to find online. You have to search for Midland Hotel and Chop House. They don't publish an online menu. I think the chef probably developes the menu depending on availability. We were there on Saturday night before Father's Day. Their website suggests making reservations for dinner, and you should. There was not an empty table in the restaurant. I made reservations around noon on the day we wanted to eat there and was able to get a table for two. We arrived a little early and had to wait, but were seated exactly at the time of our reservation. We started with a charcuterie board appetizer. It had andoui, boudin, pepperoni, prosciutto, olives, pickle vegees, cheese and bread. Plenty for 2 people to share. Everything tasted great, and all the flavors went together for a very nice beginning. We found out the andoui and boudin were handmade by the chef. For our meal, we ordered prime rib and filet mignon, both medium rare. Both were absolute perfection. Tender, juicy, and the best tasting meal I've had in a long time. We finished off with a chocolate flourless torte that we shared and coffee. The atmosphere was nice. We saw everything from shorts to casual date night clothes. There were some large family groups there for Father's Day, so it was a little loud at times, but that's to be expected. The staff was very attentive without being intrusive. Very knowledgeable about the menu and so happy to be of service. They also serve lunch and maybe brunch on the weekend. Not too sure about that. We had a great meal and all around perfect evening. We will...
Read moreOn our way to Fredericksburg from Dallas we were driving through Hico. We looked on the map for some place to eat and were expecting a small hole in the wall in a small town. What we found instead was the most amazing 5 star restaurant that we have ever been to!!!
Only open thursday-sunday, we truly lucked into a very special treat. Nestled inside The Midland Hotel is a restaurant that rivals some of the top steakhouses in Dallas. The owners are also the owners of the hotel and their 2020 dream survived a pandemic to become a place I would willingly drive 2 hours to just for the food.
I ordered the Filet Mignon. It came perfectly prepared and served with delighfuly well seasoned potatoes au gratin and a mushroom ragu. I ordered it Medium Rare and the meat was spot on.
My fiance' got the red chili fried chicken. This was a very well thought presentation. Whipped potatoes that were smooth. Served with asparagus though he opted for double potatoes. The cream gravy is out of this world.
Both meals perfectly prepared and seasoned.
I opted to finish dinner with an adult beverage. A whiskey lover myself I am always open for trying a well thought old fashioned. The beverage of the weekend was a pecan pie old fashioned. I worried that it might present too sweet and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was quite balanced with nice heat. Kudos to the bartender!
Still blown away by our discovery and look forward to coming back and...
Read moreIf you are thinking about eating here, just go. I had the best experience at a restaurant that I've had in forever. So people first. From the time we walked in we felt welcomed and comfortable. I asked what was the best thing on the menu. In reply I got, what ever you get it will be the best thing you put in your mouth! We laughed and excepted the challenge. The waitress, Cheyenne, was a hoot. We laughed, joked, and enjoyed our selves. I felt like I had been going there for years and yet this was our first time. Heather was checking up on us too, after playing a little joke on Cheyenne. I can't thank them enough for such a great time.
Now the food!!! The it was true. This was some of the best dang food I've had in a while. We liked it so much we came back for dinner! I don't care what you get, you will enjoy it. From the chips and caso, to the ribeye, it was all amazing. Burgers, chicken sandwiche, chicken fried steak, perfectly grilled steaks...... It's all amazing. They keep the menu short, and thank goodness. If it was longer you would never be able to pick.
I'm Johnathon, The Mini Pig Farrier, and I highly recommend The Chop House.
Ps, if you eat to much, you can stay in the hotel in the same building! Looking forward to a...
