It’s really comforting and inspiring to know that places like this exist. I’ve never seen any organization take care of their community in such an impactful way. I just got the shrimp and grits from Nedzra’s Food for the Soul in the kitchen and am absolutely blown away. One of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. If you find yourself here don’t skip out on the kitchen!!

SHAPE Community Center was founded by “the community” in 1969 because Houston’s Civil Rights Movement needed a place that could give birth to the programs, that would give meaning to their protests. Today, SHAPE is fondly called “The United Nations of the Hood,” for bringing together people of varied affiliations, for the improvement of the community.

Excellent Community Hub With Decades Of Endearing History & Generational Empowerment. A Wealth Of Knowledge & Diversity Plus Vegan Friendly Cafe Operation On Sunday Monday & Tuesday. Now That's Some Good Progress 🌿

I Neded To Come Back & Edit My Review. While Experiencing Homelessness & Legal Issues, I Came Here For A Haven. I Was Told By Delloyd He Would Help With The Ossies I Was Facing. I Did Not Have Any Money For Legal Representation. Delloyd Brought Me To The Lawyer They & I Was Assured I Would Be Taken Care Of... After Speaking Woth The Lawyer He Came Back & Asked Me For Payment. I Asked Him To Speak To Delloyd... He Denied Ever Saying They Would Help. I Ended Up With Court Appointed Representation & My Life Was Effected Because Of It. They Was Not The Forst Thing That Happened To Me Here... But It Was & Is Suredly The Very Last.

Prayerfully, We Find The Truth In Ourselves One...

I often visit the SHAPE Community Center to volunteer my academic tutoring skills in their after school program However on my last visit on Friday, the children were having a finger puppet workshop and I was invited to participate. It was a great stress relief and the facilitator, Sister Diana was very helpful to the children and me. We were also allowed to introduce our puppets after clean up. The children showed enormous creativity and enthusiasm in this project! Following the workshop I was able to assist one of the 7th graders with her Graphing assignment and provided some graph paper and instruction so that she could complete her homework with ease and a better understanding. SHAPE often provides academic materials for those students in need. SHAPE Community Center has been for the last 50 years and still is a much needed institution in the 3rd ward and greater,...

I have volunteered at SHAPE Community Center for more than 30years ! I tutor in the after school program and on Saturday. The staff is accommodating and the children are amazing and comical! The focus is on empowering the recipients and their families with knowledge, skills and services that they can help themselves beyond their daily challenges; and set attainable goals. Under the direction of Sister Maya and Brother Deloyd, I am able to assist students with homework in Math, Science and Reading/ELA. Within Safety constraints and curriculum standards, we have fun while learning and doing hands on science projects and art creations! I feel like Grandma, Auntie and Sister to the staff and participants in most all of the programs provided by SHAPE, and often receive timely help when I...
