Soundwaves has been around in Montrose longer than I can even remember. Going along the strip on Westheimer after Montrose you can find some of the best quirky items you’ll find in the whole city.
Take a right on Montrose at that crossroads and you’ll find Soundwaves a city block down that way.
A bulwark to the changes that Montrose has been undergoing some for the better or worse depending on whom you speak with on the matter. I find the high end condominiums and shopping centers to be a farce as for as I’m concerned.
But Soundwaves has always been the best place you can go to find obscure bands, excellent video box sets, foreign films, and zines from the best minds around.
Now they dedicate more than half of the establishment to surfing apparel and boards. Why I couldn’t say, but you gotta do what you gotta do, right? There is also a coffee shop as well inside.
Any criticisms aside, this place is a must go for anyone seeing what Houston has to offer. I’d like to say to the current owners to hear my plea to go back to the ideas of old.
Get a bigger LP selection, cater to underground sensibilities: imports from abroad, Death and Black Metal, Grindcore, Underground Hip Hop & Horrorc0re, Political Punk, D-beat, and Crust. Open your VHS DVD selection and go back to getting quirky titles to drink with your friends and watch. Be the place to sell used titles with good prices that encourages sellers to bring good things instead of selling online. People will pay a bit more to have the convenience of going to buy in person rather than paying shipping for online purchases.
Encourage artists to paint murals again on the neighborhood street facing wall. Go back to being the store of the people. Houston will love you for it.
You are still an amazing establishment and you’re amazing how you are right now. And it’s amazing to see that you’ve resisted the update of Montrose and stayed strong.
People of Houston, give stores you want to remain open your patronage, without you they will close down and there’s no one to blame for our city being a grey soulless headstone to consumerism but ourselves.
Let’s bring back the...
Read moreI literally have the worst service at this place. I've been here 5 times in my life. This last time, I got recommended by a friend to stop at this place to buy a surfboard, they said they would listen and answer my questions. The old guy who either works there or runs it is the worst sales person (I've seen him everytime) and it's been a poor experience, he is more than awkward, gets frustrated easily, has an ego problem, is not a people person at all, he skipped by me and served 3 other people as I was ready to spend 1k dollars+ all I needed were my questions answered. I got hurried, he walked away from me twice to start other projects, when I asked if I could actually get some help he was rude and obviously doesn't care about his customers. I'd go to any other shop than here they have good inventory but buying from them is not worth the drive. Please let me know when that old, white guy leaves this location, then I'll consider giving them...
