Let me start by saying this is the first time I went to the Independence location to do my grocery shopping. At my regular store they have self check out, so as I'm shopping I sort my items into separate bags. (So, I don't have to do it later on) I have all of my groceries and I'm ready to check out. As I am looking toward the front to get in line, I realize that there aren't any self check outs. I figure it won't be a huge deal and I would just ask the cashier if she can accommodate me by scanning them in the bags. I begin to ask just that and she interrupts me and says " yeah! Youre gonna have to take everything out of the bags." (Her tone was snippy and rude) I said "ok" and proceeded to put the contents of one bag on the conveyor belt. As I empty it, I place the bag in the bottom of the other cart where she will put them as she scans. I ask her to "put them in back in that bag, please and thank you." She starts scanning and I go to grab other items when I realize that she isn't putting them in the bag and is just throwing everything on top of the bag not even trying to keep my groceries organized. At that point, I'm sure i was visibly frustrated and gave up on keeping my items separated. I finished my check out, separated my items for a SECOND time, and left. I will not be coming back to this Aldi again! I love Aldi but maybe you need another pizza party for staff morale at that location! 1.) Get self check out! 2.) Get better employees! Aldi employees don't even have to stand as a cashier. I feel like she could've met me half way and at least tried to keep everything separated. Or, (at the very least) not be so rude right off the bat because someone is politely requesting that you provide a little customer service. You don't know what kind of challenges people face and sometimes the most basic chores are very hard for people to do. Rude individuals who clearly are miserable people make that harder. 7/16/24 at 5:36 pm. I don't remember her name but she was a brunette, long hair in a pony tail. I had one other interaction with an employee there, (also a woman and brunette) she was pleasant. She answered my question to the best of her ability and was friendly. It's just disappointing when people are lazy and rude, I have sympathy for how hard life is sometimes but that doesn't mean you're crappy attitude and treatment of other people...
Read moreThese low reviews are hilarious! Do people not know why they’re saving so much money shopping here?
You rent your cart for a quarter (you get it back when you return the cart, therefore, ALDI doesn’t have to hire more staff to get carts).
You bring your own bags so the store doesn’t have to supply them (which is an additional cost to the store, which is then passed onto the consumer). You can also use empty boxes from the shelves to bring your groceries home. Often there is a huge rolling basket in the store full of boxes that you can take if you happen to forget to bring your own bags, or if you don’t want to pay 15 cents per bag at the register. Also, who doesn’t have a bunch of reusable shopping bags at home?
You empty your cart on the belt, the cashier will ring up your items, and place them in a different cart. This prevents theft and speeds up the checkout process. You will then bag your own groceries at the counter along the wall. If you did not rent a cart, then you don’t get a cart on the way out! If you did, then you would return the cart and essentially “steal” a quarter.
I’m not sure why this is a new concept to people. A lot of stores operate under this same model. Locally there’s Ruler Foods owned by Kroger. And there’s also LIDL. WinCo also has a similar model.
You save money by doing things yourself. This isn’t rocket science.
I have been shopping at ALDI for 20+ years and it’s the best national chain for inexpensive groceries. The quality is great, the atmosphere is great, and the savings are huge.
The people complaining about self-checkout are probably people who steal from larger retailers. Self-checkout is a huge place where theft occurs. No self-checkout means less theft and, therefore, lower prices since the store doesn’t have to raise prices to accommodate people stealing.
If you’ve never been to an ALDI, do a quick Google search to see what to expect, or ask a fellow human being when...
Read moreHands-down the worst grocery cashier checkout experience I’ve ever had. No self check-out unfortunately. There were 2 cashiers on duty. We bought a cart full of groceries and placed our own reusable bags on the conveyor belt ahead of our groceries.
He did not greet us and took a long time to even start scanning items although there were lots of customers waiting. I finally stopped placing groceries on there to say hello and figure out why he hadn’t started scanning. He ignored my bags and scanned all my items, while haphazardly tossing them in another shopping cart with no awareness of putting fragile items including 3 bags of salad, eggs, bread, chips, berries on the bottom and piling all of the heavy items on top like detergent, jars, cans, meats. He said my total and pushed the cart aside.
I scrambled to pull out the fragile items and bag them myself. I pushed the cart to leave and he stopped me saying he needed that cart back.
I was so baffled to have this odd experience. Not sure what to make it. Perhaps he had no training. It was so bad it felt like a comedy stunt, but nobody popped out to say gotcha.
Wow! Won’t be...
