Ask for Max to be your guide. Max is experienced, knowledgeable, an excellent instructor, flexible, energetic, and listens to his customer. A guided trip with Max will make your day. The guided trip, in the first summer of Covid, will be known as the DAY OF THE MONSTER BROWN TROUT. We started the day on a high canyon edge with a good view of a section of the Lower Henry's Fork. Max talked about how to read the water, where the fish could be found. We talked about the geology, the water color, and current and how they help predict where the trout will most likely live and feed. We walked down and fished one of the runs we identified, catching several rainbows including a nice 12 incher. The whole time Max is coaching me with my cast, placement, and hook setting technique, suggesting small adjustments that made my fishing more effective. The day could have ended there and it would have been worth it, but an hour later we put-in down-river and right away I knew I was in for a treat. I think Max spent more time out in the water, holding the drift boat, and stalking big fish. He would find a fish and then position the boat so I had the best casting location for the fish. We caught a lot of fish this way. Sometimes Max would have me work a fish until we caught it or spooked it, changing flies several times. We caught two of the monster browns that way. The big guy was settled under a lava rock overhang. We started working him with two variations of a Golden Stone Fly, then switched to a dry-drop, changing the nymphs several times. The brown was eating goldens off the surface under the rock, so we switched back to the two original golden patterns, reversing the original order, and he hit it hard. Max was out of the boat, net in hand, by the time I set the hook and we landed the biggest fish I have ever caught in a river. We caught lots more fish after that, but I will never forget the monster brown Max and I caught during the first summer of Covid-19. I will be back, and Max will be my guide, and you should ask for him on your next trip to Island Park Idaho.

Read moreI've had nothing but a wonderful experience dealing with Henry's Fork Anglers whether it be in the fly shop discussing on the stream strategies or using one of the guides provided by the shop. Over the past several seasons, I have used a Henry's Fork guide, Andy Jenkins, to row myself, my wife and another friend down down the Madison, Henry's Fork, Teton and South Fork of the Snake Rivers over a combined 7 days of fishing. The experience has been amazing every single day with regards to both the professionalism and knowledge of the guide but also the opportunity to catch a bunch of fish in a variety of different ways depending on the hatches and locations. As a fairly experienced angler and one who owns a boat and has the ability to fish these same waters on my own with various friends, I never thought I would be inclined to hire a guide so often to take me fishing but after the experiences I've had with Andy, I always look forward to the next opportunity to spend a day(s) on the water with him. If the past speaks volumes.....I know it will always be a great day of fishing and conversation. I would never hesitate to suggest using Henry's Fork Anglers for all their fly fishing needs while in the eastern Idaho region. They are friendly and knowledgeable in the shop and the guide service that I'm familiar with is top notch!! You...
Read moreRude and unprofessional staff. My friend and I visited Island Park for the first time last fall for a fly fishing trip. We went to this shop to get our fishing licenses and hopefully receive some tips and advice from the staff on where to go and what to use being that we were from out of state and completely new to the area. There were only two associates behind the register when we were there but neither was very helpful. The younger guy processing our licenses gave us the quick tourist trap answer and told us a location where everyone goes to catch fish and the other guy seemed to be inconvenienced and annoyed when asked what locations we should go to or what type of flies, tactics, etc. to use. Oh, my sincerest apologies for politely asking you to do your job. If you're not there to buy a guided drift boat excursion, they don't want to be bothered. By the way, the flies here are ridiculously overpriced for what they are. You can find them cheaper at other shops, and online. I tie better flies than what they have anyway. Needless to say, we won't be back to give this place any business in the future. You'll get better advice from friendlier bar tenders and locals at the Trout Hunter bar and restaurant across the street,...
