First of all I would like to say that the guides are amazing. They will take care of you, and really spend time with you. They are also VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE!!!
That being said, their website seriously misrepresents the ability needed for some activities. The walk to Corbet High Camp is not a Leisure Walk, train for it. The climb to the summit is technical. You will be expected to complete multiple vertical rock climbs. Train for repelling and finding hand and foot holds. This is not a super hard climb but will take knowledge of technical climbing.
Corbet high camp is roughing it. Expect to be in your tent for a while if winds are bad, you cant escape them. BRING EAR PLUGS, or headphones. They say to bring some snacks, bring a good amount of food if you like to eat. Breakfast is a Burrito, dinner is something hot. It does seem that Exums high camp is better equipped and in a much better spot. They are actually on the lower saddle, closer to the summit.
The check in at JHMG in Jackson was not at all impressive. I would have much rather gotten advice on what to bring from my actual guide and not an office dweller. The packing list is WAY to much!!! Your guide will tell you this at the trail head, be prepared to slough some things from your pack. If you trust your gear do not let them pressure you into renting anything. We were told jackets that we brought were not waterproof, when in fact they were.
I can not say enough about the guides!!! They are great. Corporate is much more worried about getting into your wallet than listening to boots on the ground. I would definitely use their guides again, but not if they are...
Read moreMy family and I climbed the Grant Teton in July 2023. My party was me and my wife, both 34, my brother, 22, and my mother, 57. My wife and I have a fair amount of outdoor climbing and hiking experience, but my mom and brother are relatively new to climbing mountains and outdoor climbing.
We had two of the best guides in the business, Matt Shove and Keith Sidle. Both are extremely experienced mountain guides with a massive breadth of knowledge, as well as great personalities to keep the mood positive on tough terrain!
The hike to high camp is certainly difficult. My mother trained quite extensively with weighted packs before this trip, and still felt that initial approach to be quite difficult. Ultimately, it's great to know ahead of time what a 7 mile hike with +4200 feet of elevation gain feels like!
Their high camp was a great experience as well! It felt great camping ON THE MOUNTAIN. Stars are night are amazing, and even though we experienced some storms and really high winds, that just added to the experience!
The summit day was certainly much more steep hiking and scrambling, with some technical bits of climbing mixed in, mostly towards the top. My group has been climbing for some time so the climbing portion wasn't difficult for us.
The overall fitness level to get up there was the "crux" so to speak in our group, but everyone did really well!
Overall, our experience climbing the Grand Teton with JHMG was amazing, and I can't thank our guides enough! Can't wait for lap 2!
Thanks...
Read moreThis is an amazing trip that has been on our “Bucket List” for a very long time. First, is a somewhat physically demanding hike/climb but by no means undoable with a little preparation/conditioning. From a fulfillment perspective, it shattered all of my expectations (and they were quite high!). From the beauty of high camp, the fun climbing during the “check out/climbing-alpine basics day, to the climb itself and the views from the Grand, the whole experience was AMAZING! As far as JHMG, we couldn’t have asked for a better guide/guide service. High camp had amazing views and the tents were clean and felt more like shelters then just regular tents, even in fairly high wind and storm that we had one of the nights. Watching the golden light reflect off of the towering cliffs and glacier during sunrise was breathtaking! Now on to our guide, Cheyenne Chaffee. Again, we could not have asked for a better guide! He was extremely professional and safety conscious throughout the entire trip. He is an excellent instructor and both my wife and I feel like we learned a lot about movement though the alpine environment and climbing techniques (even though both of us had done some rock climbing in the past). While being an excellent teacher and very knowledgeable about the geography and geology of the area, he was also very fun and outgoing! He is also very patient! On top of everything, he is an excellent chef! The cuisine was excellent and certainly hit the spot after...
