We had never been to this movie theater until 17-Jan-2015. We went to see "Selma," and decided to use our Fandango gift card that we won in a gift exchange over the holiday season. There is ample free parking. The prices are about the same for popcorn, candy and beverages albeit expensive. A small bag of popcorn costs $6 and change. They offer FREE popcorn and soda pop refills like most others. At these prices get five or six free refills of popcorn! The matinee prices are/were very reasonable (it was $10 and change for two Adults, but there is a $2 convenience fee that was tacked on for using our Fandango gift card). I rate this place with 3-stars because (1) The movie theater is in the middle of no where. It was not easy to find (but it is on the east side of Central Ave). (2) Restaurants are lacking in this area (almost non-existent). (3) The parking lot is tight and maneuverability was difficult, and finally, (4) The seats are comfortable (minimal elbow room). (Note: I am petite and weigh 120 lbs and I was uncomfortable). I kept bumping my elbow into the person next to me. Annoying! Look for the tall sign with red orange letters "AMC" located a little south of Grand Avenue. We went to a Subway on North Avenue since we had 1-hour to kill before the movie. We noticed bullet-proof glass at this Subway (we've never seen this before at a Subway). Obviously, we must have been in a high-crime area if this Subway had bullet-proof and theft-proof glass. We noticed a lot of Mexican restaurants (they were "cash" only) on Grand Avenue, and also noticed some were no longer in business. If you are looking for a sit-down restaurant then head over to the Brickyard (Fullerton and Narragansett). Another reason for my 3-star rating is that the spaces in the parking lot are tight. Don't be surprised if your car door gets dinged. People pulling in and out of the parking lot were clueless. We figured it out right away. IF you are not familiar with this parking lot, you could end up in a fender-bender (as we witnessed). Would we go here again? Maybe. We are close to three major theaters. However, "Selma" was not playing at 1 pm closer to our neighborhood choices, which was the reason we decided to go here. The positive: 18 different movies playing simultaneously. I recommend this theater if you live closer to the area/neighborhood. Yes, it is very clean and there are tons of stalls in the washrooms (also very clean). This is also a very family friendly theater. We saw lots of children under the age of 10 here. We encountered a friendly, hospitable and helpful staff. We did not encounter any security guards. Not sure why another reviewer made a statement regarding having "lots of security" at this movie theater. This could give the connotation that it is not a "safe" theater. They have a policy that children are not permitted to enter a "R" rated movie, but it only applies after 6 pm. We saw a child (under the age of 5) going to a "R" rated movie with her father. When I brought it to the attention of the Manager I was informed that Management cannot do "anything about it" because it is a matinee movie. This is ridiculous and wrong! The policy needs to be implemented across the board (matinee movie or not).
We did not experience any safety issues. We felt safe. We noticed people of all ages here. It is also very diverse/multi-cultural, which we appreciated. We had no issues picking up our tickets (ordered and paid for on-line). It was quick, easy and painless. This is a very inexpensive movie place, which is perfect for people with lots of kids. Even the evening shows are dirt-cheap. Bada-bing...
Read moreI like coming here to watch matinees by myself and it had been a good experience. I had been taking my Mom to Melrose park in the past but wanted to bring her here, especially since they have so much handicap parking out front. I thought it would be a good and accommodating experience for her too since she is elderly, can't walk long distances and uses a cane. But 1st I want to say some of the staff are real personable and helpful. There was only one line open and then the A-list line. I was there this past Saturday afternoon to see Us and unfortunately there were a bunch of 8 unruly kids that absorbed all of the staff's attention. I asked can we pay at another register because my Mom can't stand up long waiting for the kids to settle down and finally buy their tickets. The manager was nice enough to take us to guest services to purchase our tickets. I also let her know that I'm a stubs member and the whole process was quick and done. The rest of my review is a commentary on areas of opportunity to make improvements: 1) have automatic doors for elderly/ handicap persons to open 2) have some handicap or elderly seating near the door upon entry while family members wait in line for tickets. 3) have more seating for handicap / elderly in the halls throughout the theater 4) when the persons who clean the theaters are not busy cleaning have them safeguard the handicap seating in the halls and in the theaters for those that actually need it. I witnessed 2 elderly ladies come in together looking at the seat they probably selected being taken up by 2 abled-bodied persons and the only seating left required them to try to walk up stairs. When the movie was done, I had to ask an abled bodied family 3 times to make room on The One Bench that was in the halls near the restroom while we waited for my niece to return from the restroom. 5) have smaller portions of popcorn and soda for those that don't want a big bucket or big bag of popcorn at a more economical price. A snack size & pricing. My Mom complained that the popcorn tasted stale. I don't ever buy food for myself but I do for my family. 2 popcorns and one regular sized drink being $26 is just outrageous. And then another $14 for 2 more drinks for my nieces. I hope that there is more seating placed in the halls throughout the theater and some staff person makes rounds in the theater up to showtime to make sure the handicap/elderly get priority for handicap/elderly seating. Until then I will probably be coming back to...
Read moreI usually try not to give places such low ratings but after this concessions experience tonight, I felt it was deserved. This is normally a decent theater with good prices, and I generally have no complaints. The issue tonight was that I purchased popcorn and when I went for a refill not only had they run out of popcorn, a line had formed with customers waiting for refills. After waiting, the employee behind the concession stand takes all of our buckets with one hand with his ungloved fingers touching the inside of the buckets, and starts refilling the buckets all at once. I tried my best to keep track of my bucket but the employee at one point held them out of sight, brought them back all filled and just put them on he counter as the employee walked away. We all stood there not knowing what just happened, not knowing which bucket was which. We almost certainly walked away with different buckets. We all had this look on our faces of disgust. I know myself and another customer just tossed this buckets. It may not seem like a huge deal but the idea of mixing and matching food items is a big deal to me especially when they are from different unknown people. That was terrible food handling practices. I know how it can be working at this particular theater seeing as how it was my first job, and was a shift manager there at one point but this was completely off putting. I get the majority are high school kids with their first jobs but there should really be managers behind the counters paying closer attention to these kinds of things. Maybe it is just me but I cannot stand when people mishandle food no matter if its popcorn from a movie theater or a five start restaurant these food handling and hygiene practices are universal. There is no excuse for it. They should make changes quickly. They are lucky to have avoided a visit from a health inspector or a mystery shopper when this happened. I will think twice before...
