My daughter signed up for a summer course which was inaccurately described in their “course catalog”. She struggled with the course format of strictly online without any live/zoom instruction and everything being from the book. The “professor” was only able to meet twice a week for office hours which was not explained in the course summary. He dumped all the information and details 24 hours before the course started, well past the date where she could have asked for a refund. My daughter has text anxiety so she asked about the JJCs disability resources and accommodations- the “professor” had no clue, and sent her an email address to contact for their disability resource department… one individual who was out all summer with no alternative. Basically, anyone seeking accommodations for the summer semester was out of luck, with no one to help at all. When my daughter explained this to the “professor” he emailed her back saying “yeah, you probably shouldn’t have taken this course- it’s really for math majors only (we have the actual email).
My daughter ended up dropping the course and asking for a refund due to these circumstances and was shut down within a week, as all these reasons weren’t legitimate to JJC- and once they decide, there’s no appealing. The “advisor” was completely indifferent to her experience because she was a visiting student taking a summer course. Didn’t care at all about my daughters experience or struggles due to the poor course description and only told her that she could drop and request a refund…. Completely emotionless, robotic response.
So, don’t spend your money to take courses here. They don’t care about their true purpose of education, misrepresent their courses, have NO disability support or accommodation assistance in the summer, and only care about quickly...
Read moreNow that I've transferred on to a real school, I can really see how inadequately prepared I am thanks to the quality of instruction at JJC. Only a handful of the professors I had did a acceptable job. Only one did a fantastic job. I'm constantly having to go back and teach myself things that JJC blatantly left out. I kept all of my notes, homework, and quizzes from all of my previous JJC classes, and refer to them often when I get stuck in my current classes. NEVER is it of any help because the material I need, we didn't go over at JJC. I'm in Calculus classes now that don't allow graphing calculators...all of the math classes I took at JJC required graphing calculators, and we used them so frequently that I sincerely feel it hindered the learning process. JJC also closes it's campus for "emergencies" which is usually anything over 3" of snow. There are no make up days whatsoever. If your class cant fit in the material you missed during the emergency days, you don't get to learn it...which should be illegal. I've also had professors here cancel class for multiple personal reasons. Say you had two snow days, and 2 cancellations due to instructor "personal issues". That's well over a week of class time (that you paid a lot of money for) gone! That's typically equivalent to 3-5 sections of material that will be squeezed into the tight remainder of the semester, or crossed off the syllabus completely. I had a Chem professor just up and leave the country for the remainder of the semester, two weeks before the final. This type of stuff is completely unacceptable. I honestly feel that If I began my education at a school other than JJC, I would have a firmer grasp on the material, and the confidence to back it up. Avoid Joliet Junior College...they just...
Read moreJoliet Junior College is a good college with a variety of good and some bad teachers. However it still a great facility with lots of room for students to join activities, clubs and even find some quiet places to study. Personally for my major of computer engineering this colors does a very good job in creating courses that transfer to most major universities so I do not have much trouble learning the content that is offered at those universities and this University. The tuition is also fairly great for a college if you compare them to major universities and you will be saving lots and lots of money. So overall they do a fairly good job at making this college financially attractive. However as of when I am writing this I can say that there are some things that are not right with the college and it's not political but mainly not allowing clubs to eventhubs certain places on the campus in which those places were paid by the students do to a tuition increase. aside from that, like I said it does a very good job with the many areas and especially with the...
