This company was quick to reply to my Facebook post. I was looking for someone to plane our pile of pallet wood for a barn-style sliding door I was creating for my boyfriend’s Mom’s bathroom. I meticulously with a friend, took apart pallets and inspected board by board to remove all nails. It took two full afternoons. The Facebook post had a photo of our pile of pallet boards as well as the request.
When we arrived at their studio, he commented how the quantity of wood looked like more than they expected. We explained our project and he offered to give us one of his pallets by the trash to add to the pile. We did not denail that one, because it was added last minute.
One helper said the planing would take a day to complete, but then the boss said maybe by Friday. He eventually settled on asking us to pick up by next Wednesday, about a week from when we dropped it off. He was very confident he could get it all done for $240 and added “the boards will be perfectly planed and straight-edged.” For good measure, I let him know I can only afford $240 and please don’t go over that. Please stop if you are going to. In hindsight, that opened up a door to be taken advantage of. Unfortunately, what he said about perfect was just showmanship and not the truth.
I didn’t hear from them for the entire week but I reach out the day before to confirm pickup and price.
The next day no one was in the studio except the helper who was kind to offer to help me load my car. He told me that the pallets had a strange chemical on it that smelled like soap, that gave them headaches and burned their hands. I thanked him for his time, expressed concern about the chemical, sent the Zelle (money) and then left. The company called to check in on the service. I said it wasn’t ideal but I thanked them for their time. However, 20 minutes later, I called them to express my dissatisfaction but most importantly, that what we received was not what was promised or expressed.
I was told I talked too much, but they stayed on the phone to listen. My biggest complaint was that they had the wood for an entire week and no one reached out to update me on the difficulties, change the price quote or even just to return the wood, if it was too difficult to work with. He also said he has worked with pallets many times before. Why weren’t gloves put on? Why didn’t they inspect the wood better before giving the quote or call later to renegotiate the price? They also accused me of not being honest about denailing and ruining their machine. I denailed every nail that was visible from our pile. But not the pallet they gave us.
I told them this project looked like this was done last day. He admitted the majority was, which means most of the week, it was just sitting there. They kept our wood for an entire week and waited the last day to complete the project.
There was no integrity in this company, no concern for my project or deadline and no communication. It really seems like they just wanted the money with no concern for the quality of their service.
I let them keep my hard earned money. I was quite respectful but firm in the phone, but I was met with defensiveness, being cut-off, accusations and blame, so they were also...

Read moreOur kitchen island had a 4' square wooden countertop that, after 20 years, was coming apart. It was some kind of cheap wood stained dark. We had the Levi Harper team create a walnut countertop from 1.5-inch strips of wood (butcher block style). The cost ($2000) was actually a little lower than from a conventional countertop store or Internet direct-to-consumer supplier, especially when you consider shipping costs. At 3 weeks, the production and delivery time was quicker as well. It is nice to get something locally made because if we trash it they can refinish it for us without $800 in round-trip shipping. Right now it looks so good that we don't want to put anything on it or...
