Keaau is a very small town just off of the Volcano Highway (Highway 11). The shopping center is the heart of this beautiful little community. The Foodland market is located here. There is an ACE Hardware store, laundromat, a very small Longs Pharmacy (just medicine and the like - not a super store) but ACE and Foodland have many of the items that you might need. Many local style walk-up restaurants are included in this one stop local and regional shopping center. It is a good place to try some of the Hawai'i Island specialty foods that you will find nowhere else on Earth. People are friendly and helpful if you are not overbearing or in too big of a hurry. Subway and a coffee shop are in the same center. McDonald's is accros the street from the Keaau Shopping Center along with a Shell gas station. Don't miss out on the Keaau Farmers market directly across KEAAU-PAHOA Road where you can find local produce and many hand crafted items that are made locally by local crafters and artists. You can try Philippine foods and enjoy a live music performance by local musicians (don't forget to leave a tip for the performers). Try a cup of Ka"u coffee (some say better than Kona coffee) roasted right on the spot. You can buy a few pounds of some of world's finest coffee direct from the roaster. Then you can walk a few steps to the United States Post Office or the LocalLocal package and shipping store to send your purchases back home (don't forget to send some to your friends and family). Nothing in Keaau is more than just a few short steps away, so park your rental car and take a stroll. Keaau is not a traditional tourist destination. It is almost always busy during the day because people from all over the Puna side of the island come here to shop, visit and take care of their business. It is well worth your time to spend an hour or two with the true Hawai'i Island ohana (family) in...
Read moreI went to pick up my pizza the other night. I ran to the foodland door when they were just locking up, i asked nicely and was allowed to run in and grab my one favorite oreo that i can't find anywhere in pahoa. But they were very very friendly! Very helpful. If i ever ran up to the door just being locked at malama market in pahoa, i would most definitely be met with a big fat NO.and a couple scowls to go along with the NO. I think the man that met me with a smile at foodland was a manager. He was very friendly. Kind. And makes me want to shop at foodland from now on. I really hope that malama market makes the move to puna kai shopping center soon. And i hope when we have more room. We will have more smiles and friendliness. Most are friendly at malama market. But some have very grumpy attitude at closing time. Foodland is a spacious place. And very friendly people....
Read moreFirst and most noticeable is the tight parking lot. You can certainly tell its age. However, Foodland is a great grocery store if you don't need to make the trip into Hilo. By that same rational, you also have Ace Hardware for those unexpected "oops", like a broken drain pipe. There's also a laundromat and natural food store to meet your other needs. Speaking of needs, there's plenty for the hungry. Besides Foodland's poke (fish) department and Deli, there's L&L a plate lunch shop that offers a variety of local favorites and chinese dishes. Then there's Lemongrass with chinese, vietnamese and thai food. Can't go wrong here. And of course for the quick game day bite, there's Pizza Hut and Subway. Need a new hairdo? Supercuts is in the building. Also conveniently across the street is Longs Drugs (CVS), McDonald's, and a Shell...
