In the third week of May, four of us booked a four-day fishing charter with Colby, and while that time of year isn’t always considered peak season, he turned it into an unforgettable experience.
Meeting up each morning was quick and easy. Colby’s boat, Double Header, is top-notch—immaculately clean, fully equipped, and powered by twin 250hp Honda outboards that are practically brand new. It gets you where you need to go fast and comfortably.
Colby grew up hunting and fishing in the area, and his deep knowledge of the local waters and wildlife is immediately evident. He was fully committed to making the trip special for each of us, and it showed in every detail. Beyond the fantastic fishing, we got to go squid jigging, crabbing, whale watching, and even spotted some black bears onshore. One of the highlights was a pod of porpoises playing around the boat—it was magical.
Over four days, we not only caught more fish than we could carry but also walked away with a true Alaskan experience. Colby’s respect for the fishery and the wildlife was clear, and his focus on safety and sustainability gave us even more confidence in his expertise.
He takes great pride in what he does, and it shows in his enthusiasm—especially when you catch a fish! You can tell he genuinely loves sharing his passion for fishing and the outdoors with others.
All in all, it was a phenomenal four days. We experienced so much more than just fishing—we learned about the ecosystem through the eyes of someone who has grown up immersed in it. We’d do it again in a heartbeat. If you’re looking for the real Alaskan experience, you can’t go wrong with Colby and the Double Header. Highly...
Read moreWe booked a trip with Colby after our cruise excursion was unexpectedly cancelled. Lucky for us he was available and willing to take our 6, 9, and 11 year old children out where the cruise fishing excursions wouldn’t allow for our youngest to go.
Colby was very professional and prompt. He met us on time right when we disembarked and was ready to go. We originally had planned to go halibut fishing but Mother Nature wasn’t cooperating. There were 5-6 ft waves where we were supposed to go for halibut and since we had the kids and I get sea sick he suggested we try for king salmon instead (again lucky for us I had decided to go ahead and purchase the king salmon add on for our fishing licenses). I am so glad we decided to listen to this recommendation! We caught our limit of king salmon within the first few hours and ended up having 3 on at one time and having to let one go! He then took us to fish for rockfish until it was time to head in to catch our boat.
He even took our fish to get processed after he dropped us off so we could have it sent to us when we got back. He had all of the paperwork available and helped us figure out what to order and how to have it packaged.
I would recommend Fish Finders to anyone looking for a guide to take them out for a fishing tour in Ketchikan. We had a great day and appreciated all of...
Read moreMe and a couple of buddies, five years back, planned a trip to Ketchikan for a weekend of salmon fishing. Coming from Seattle, it was a quick 1hr 45min flight. A 5 minute ferry and we were in the town. Tons of places to stay at a reasonable price. We met Colby at the dock the next moring at 7:00 am. Still not knowing what to expect we headed out from the dock for about 20-30 minutes. First off were the halibut. We we're on to them in a few minutes. As we were anchored for the halibut, we landed a few Pacific Cod, Rock fish and a couple of Snapper. Definitely a plus for the cooler. Colby then took us fishing for salmon. It was unreal bringing in numerous 15-30lb salmon. We landed a few chum salmon that were awesome on the grill too. All around, Colby seemed to know where the fish were and the time of day to hit each species. Watching the Killer Whales and Humpbacks was an added treat! We have our two trips booked for this summer and plan to make this an...
