Let’s face it: this is the closest theater in some distance. I’ll give credit where credit is due—the kids who work here are very nice, they work hard, and there’s a decent selection of films, though that has ebbed and flowed over the years as both the fortunes of the Kingston Collection (née the Independence Mall) and the film industry have had their ups and downs. It can be a great place to pull a Don Draper and treat yourself to an afternoon movie in almost complete isolation or to bring your favorite kiddo to see the latest Disney hit. The prices for tickets, popcorn, sodas, and candy are usually ridiculous to those of us of a certain age, but there are some movies that can only be appreciated on the silver screen. For those of us who are frugal, keep in mind those costs are not always so steep!
Growing up on the South Shore in the 80s, I remember calling what was then called Hoyt's Cinema ("take Route 3 to Exit 8") and hearing about Tuesday "bargain days--all seats, all shows, only $4!" Tuesdays: all seats, all shows, just $7! This week I ventured there to take in a matinee show of Dune 2. Great movie. Loved it. The icing on the cake? Popcorn is also 50 percent off! If you haven't been to the movies in a minute, in part due to the expenses, treat yourself to bargain day at Regal...

Read moreWe have been going to this theater for years but will no longer be doing so. The popcorn was scrapped up from the bottom of the bin and was so filled with unpopped kernels that it was inedible. I brought it back (we had the large and were allowed a refill anyway). Woman behind the counter said I was lucky that I had refills when I asked for and new bucket of corn and told her why. They then proceeded to give me the bottom of the same bin again and then turned the machine on to make a new batch. So again, no popcorn for us. Also, the movie was set to start at 11am. Between 11-12:35 we saw approximately five previews and the rest of the entire time was filled with commercials. I don't know if this is where all theater chains are heading but I did will not pay for a service and then be held captive waiting for a movie to start while being slammed with advertisements as if I was watching...
