I ordered an engagement ring with this shop in October 2022. After multiple return visits to have the ring resized due to the fact that the shop originally ordered the ring at the wrong size (compared to what I had ordered) and then incorrectly resized it the first time, all seemed initially well. Almost two years later, in August 2024, my fiancée and I had a horrible morning when we discovered that the main diamond had fallen out of her ring. After two anxiety inducing hours of searching, we decided to check our sink pipes for peace of mind. Thankfully, we found the diamond in our pipes.
Like most non-jewelers, I thought diamonds are not supposed to fall out of the cradle (although I'm sure on rarer occasions this could happen based on wear and use), so I wanted to understand what had happened. I asked a trusted family friend's jewelry manufacturer (i.e., someone who makes ring settings from scratch) to look at the setting. He told me that it appeared that the setting was made for a circle diamond, but I had ordered an oval diamond. You run into issues when you try to fit a square peg in a round hole. The same is true when you try to fit an oval in a circle. Additionally, the manufacturer explained that because the ring had to be resized multiple times, it likely put unnecessary stress on the prongs (which were already working too hard to keep a diamond in place that the cradle wasn't designed for). Therefore, he advised that we have a new setting made that was appropriate for the diamond I ordered, instead of trying to fit my fiancée's oval diamond back into this circle setting (because there was a chance that the diamond would fall out again).
I called the shop owner to inform him what had happened, and asked why he would use a setting with the wrong shape. He told me he ordered an oval setting, and told me that the setting he ordered could be identified by the mounting number 82941. I could research it and see he had ordered the appropriate setting. He would therefore refuse to cover any expenses I chose to incur having a new setting made with another manufacturer, and told me he believed I was being "swindled."
I researched mounting number 82941. A side by side of that setting (according to the top three supplier hits for that setting after an internet search) and my fiancée's setting can be seen below. Mounting number 82941 (on the left) is an oval setting, but it is clearly different from the setting of my fiancée's ring (on the right). The paperwork associated with my ring does not indicate any mounting number for the setting, so I cannot be sure whether the setting my fiancée received was a circle or oval setting. But based on my eye test, the setting appears far more circular than ovular (see the second photo below). Moreover, because the shop owner had told me he bought a setting that clearly didn't match my fiancée's ring, I'm less inclined to believe he ordered a correct, oval setting in the first place.
My purpose in writing this review is not to personally attack the shop, its owner, or its employees. Its to simply lay out the facts of my situation, which I believe potential consumers have a right to be aware of before choosing to purchase a ring at this shop. I see the owner tends to respond to negative reviews rather harshly, so a more detailed review laying out the fact's of my situation as objectively as possible can be found here: https://www.weddingwire.com/reviews/twin-city-jewelers-lakewood/642f8078537fd4a1.html.
Based on the facts of my entire experience, it does not appear to me that I am now being “swindled” by some competitor and instead appears that the shop did not order the appropriate setting for the diamond I ordered. And when I asked the shop owner about this issue, my concerns were not taken seriously, and he stated he purchased a setting for the ring that he clearly didn't. This whole situation has been a shame, and I hope others do not have a...
