Johanna Furst is an excellent art teacher. I am currently, rekindling my painting skills after a 20 year hiatus. My main skills are all digital as a multimedia artists. I find staring at a screen all day can be taxing on the body. I want to use my eyes and my hands in a different way, as I prepare for retirement.
Johanna's studio is on the top floor of one of the oldest antique shops in Lambertville, NJ. The area has a long history of inspiring American artists. It looks toward the town below, with the Delaware River mountains in the background. You are surrounded by all the amazing Furst paintings, yet influenced by other PA Impressionists' New Hope School paintings. The opportunity to glance at many their works, as you walk up the stairs to her studio . Everything is right for inspiration, focus, and concentration needed to paint in oils, not an easy task!
Johanna's demeanor is conducive to teaching artists to paint: both newbies and seasoned. She is patience and caring, yet knows how to steer you in a better direction when your painting goes off course. If you are interested in learning how to paint, I highly recommend taking one of the many...
Read moreI took my first painting class with Johanna and it was so much fun! Johanna taught us painting basics for abstract art, we practiced what we learned and then moved onto our canvases to create an abstract painting. Johanna provided critique, feedback and guidance while we painted. She is a skilled teacher in guiding me to find what's inside myself to come out on the canvas. Johanna gently nudged us to get the best out of our paintings. Her critiques were very useful and helped us grow as we went. We didn't feel judged or wrong in what we were doing. She helped me express and develop my painting. Johanna is a beautiful person and her class was a wonderful experience.
My partner & I took a 2.5 painting abstract art class with Johanna at the People's store in Lambertville on Feb 4th. We all painted something different. This was not one of those classes where we all paint the same thing. I learned even more by hearing critiques for the other paintings and seeing the progression of the paintings of my classmates. I loved that I didn't need any experience to take this class. I can't wait...
Read moreMy mother worked with Johanna and here is her review: I have enjoyed knowing Johanna for about ten years; for at least five of which she was the art teacher for our artists group in my retirement home. We all flourished and improved under her guidance and encouragement. I had no formal art training at the beginning, but Johanna gave me direction and instruction so that I became a fairly competent artist. She has the patience to explain and encourage each person within his own talent. I started with oil painting and learned how to mix paints to achieve the colors I wanted and how to work toward a balanced painting. Then I became interested in pencil artwork and worked with faces that interested me because of their expressions. Covid put an end to our early group but all of my friends remember Johanna and her way of increasing our ability. She is an asset to any teaching...
