In short - definitely check out Martellen’s! Maybe get your alterations done elsewhere though. They have beautiful dresses and a wonderful staff. I went dress shopping to three different boutiques in October 2020 for my dress with my mom and two maids of honor during COVID and Martellen's was by far my favorite experience. The team there were all so nice and helpful and they understood my vision so well. They picked all of the dresses because of COVID but they ALL matched my style so well I didn't mind at all. I also went back and forth on the color and eventually picked ivory and the consultants were very helpful to make that change. I am a size 12 in wedding dresses. The one I had tried on in the store was many sizes bigger, so they clipped the back together. There was a small crease at my hips that they told me was inevitable because of my body shape, but it was so unnoticeable that I didn’t care. However, when I got my actual dress delivered and tried it on, the crease went all the way around my entire waist. I do have big hips, but I wasn’t expecting the whole dress to be creased because of my hips. (Measurements: B-36 W-31 H-42) I was a little upset and so I had to make an extra alteration appointment to try and get it fixed. I did my alterations here in-store, and I am not sure if I recommend it. They did eventually fix the majority of the problem by the wedding day so that is good news, but I was just a bit shocked and pretty stressed about it because it looked pretty different from when I had tried it on. So I am still recommending you go, but just be aware that if you have bigger hips, this strapless, A-line style may sit a little differently than you think. My bustle also was in a weird spot on my butt and I wish it was raised to the start of my hips to have more of a smooth transition, but they had pre-hemmed my dress when I had initially ordered it which meant it could only be raised to a certain height. My dress also was really tight around my chest and the clasp popped on my wedding day. I had to spend a lot of time asking bridesmaids to safety-pin it together because with semi-slight movements it would pop again. I would maybe recommend either making it a tad looser/bigger or adding in a second silver clasp in alterations. I still wouldn’t have changed anything about buying the dress that I got from this shop, because I really did like the staff and the experience at Martellen’s. I found the most unique, gorgeous wedding dress here, the third wedding dress I ever tried on. It was much more expensive than I planned to spend, but it was perfect for me. They also had a sample of the bridesmaid dress I wanted to get, so I set up the appointment and we ordered the bridesmaid dresses here, too.

The ladies are all very nice and helpful. They offered to take a picture of my mom and I together with the dress I purchased. They ordered swatches and fabric from the dress company for me.

There was a couple issues with appointments. They had no record in their calendar of my initial appointment, but they were able to accommodate me and gave me an available dressing room (good thing since we did buy a dress! 😉 ). When my dress came in, the girl I talked to said I didn't need an appointment to come try it on, but when my mom called another day, the lady she talked to did want us to schedule a time.

Although we were very happy with the location, the selection, the staff, the turnaround time, etc, we were not that happy with alterations. It seemed like she was hardly adjusting it when my dress needed to be let out in back and the length shortened more. We had not been able to get it zipped and when we picked it up a few days before the wedding, they had not planned on my trying it on, but I wanted to to make sure we could get me in it the day of the wedding! So they did let me use an available fitting room. Then they hung it back up nicely for me, pressed it, and helped us get it into our car with the rain.

Two of my bridesmaids did their alterations here also and weren't pleased either. One girl felt like the seamstress just didn't know what to do to get her dress to fit right so they just gave up after a few fittings. The other girl needed more work than predicted so they ended up having to charge her more. Maybe my bridesmaids dresses were just a bad choice for their height and body, but I wasn't 100% pleased with my own dress either, so I am not so sure about their alterations. Martellen's is the best bridal shop I have ever had the pleasure of stepping foot in! From my initial contact with the shop, they have provided the most wonderful and helpful customer service!

I found a dress on Pinterest and found that Martellen's carried the particular style. When I e-mailed the shop to ask about the availability and price, the owner, Mary Ellen responded quickly and was very helpful. She set me up with an appointment just days later to try it on.

My appointment was the first time I had ever tried on wedding dresses myself, although I have been a bridesmaid and had visited several other shops in the Chicago suburbs. The quality of customer service here is on another level! My mom, sister and I were greeted by all of the staff with such a warm welcome. They reserved 2 hours for my bridal appointment and even though it was a busy Saturday, they provided excellent service and I felt like I was the only person in the shop.

Taja was helping me and she is wonderful!!! She is young, fun, and very stylish. She has such a great and funny personality she made the experience so enjoyable for myself and my family. We spent the time laughing and trying on lots of glamorous dresses! Other staff members would stop by and chat and this created such a warm environment, I felt very comfortable. All of the dresses are very affordable (under $2,000) so I was able to try on anything I wanted in the store. I ended up falling head over heels for a different dress (a sparkly Stella York) and I will definitely be going back in a couple of weeks to order and show the dress off to my other bridesmaids.

The staff is not pushy, they encourage you to come back, and they will order the dress as close to your size to avoid expensive alterations. They also can store your dress until your big day so that you are able to order your dress as early as you would like.
