Usually can find fresh produce and any Latin-branded products for cheap. Would not purchase local/American brands here as the prices are inflated. Example: At Ralphs, the Goya brand frozen plantains are $4. At Numero Uno, the very same frozen plantains are a little over $2. At Numero Uno, American Branded cereal will cost you around $5 a box. At Ralphs the cereal will be between $2.50-$4 and most times they have sales going. The produce is definitely inexpensive and recommended. Can't really comment on the meat department, but personally I wouldn't buy meat here just because the smell in that section is VERY unpleasant, makes you wonder if they are concealing dead bodies there or something. It's not a good smell at all and I'm surprised the Health Department hasn't shut that section down to be honest. According to other reviews, the meat is cheap, and I feel like it's cheap for a reason. Cheap doesn't always mean "good". If I want to buy meat, I'd prob just drive the extra couple miles to Ralphs and do the meat. Costs more but at least it's fresh and doesn't have an odor.
Again, there are pros and cons about this market, as someone who is a pretty regular customer. I've never had issues with the staff or security here, other than the fact that with some there seems to be a language barrier which isn't really their fault considering they mostly cater to a specific demographic. They are still generally very pleasant and will try to answer your questions.
Also, they do have shuttle service that runs daily until 8pm if you buy a lot of groceries and need a ride home and are within a certain mile radius if the store. I believe you have to spend at least $15 (that's the requirement for Ralphs at least but it could be more at Numero Uno; I'd say ask someone before you start shopping). You do have to present a receipt with proof also.
Something else I do like about this store is that they also have a check-cashing center as well as Western Union. Sometimes I go here to make my money orders for rent when I'm feeling too lazy to go to PLS. You can also renew your car registration here as well. Very convenient. In addition, there is also a Wells Fargo ATM here too. Fees are kinda high if you don't have a WF account but it is there if you need to pull out some quick cash. Personally, I find it more effective to just get cash back with a small purchase like a single banana for a few cents...
Read moreTheir prices are very expensive when compared to other supermarkets in the area, they do carry a decent selection of Latin American products, they do have weekly specials that sometimes are fairly priced, for the most part the staff is friendly, but some are not bilingual and will help you the best they can even if they don't understand you.
Seven years later Numero 1 is gone, and Superior Grocers have taken over. I will discontinue shopping at this dump. Prices are high, service got worse, the butchers don't care, they are friendly but by company policy they won't cut your meat, they will redirect you to grab from the prepackaged section, why bother having butchers on staff? Cashiers have to scan your shopping cart, which adds time, Superior get your act straight, you pay your employees by the hour, not your customers, this is a waste of time for us the customers. We have to wait every time they have to come around to scan the cart. Not enough staff at the registers to move the volume of customers at any given time. The bakery went to hell, sweet bread used to be acceptable now is just bad. If you could I highly encourage customers to shop somewhere else. They take advantage of the Hispanic community and the language barrier to markup their prices. You could easily save $20+ shopping someplace else. There is a lingering fishy smell in the meat department that never goes away. If you are to use the 15 items or less lane, be ready to wait longer if clients with more items line up in front, they are not redirected to other register. Also if they (cashiers) have to return an item there is an extra wait because it has to be authorized by a head cashier, this might take a while, if you are in a hurry and they are busy, expect to wait in line...
