I recently adopted a dog who had a slightly irritated incision where he had been neutered. We brought him home where it continued to heal up except in one small area where the site remained open. A few days later, his incision suddenly re-opened and started profusely bleeding all over him and our home. He has been in tremendous pain, barely walking, squatting to go #1 (which isn't normal for him) and whining constantly. This is the 3rd animal we have gotten from KHS that has had horrible issues with their incision site. The first animal I adopted (an adult male cat) was tattooed and labeled as "FIXED" on all his medical paperwork---- I even signed the contract which specified the fact that the animal I was adopting WAS neutered by KHS. He began spraying all over my home until I decided to pay for a vet visit, as a last resort before returning him, only to be told he was in fact, NOT FIXED AT ALL. This is completely unacceptable. This is a blatant breach of the contract (that must be signed as a requirement to adopt) which I am expected to hold up on my end. I received no reimbursement for the outside vet visit in addition to the fact that I did not hear back from vet services for over a week--- I was an employee of KHS (St. Matthewsâs location) at the time of this incident and still received unfair and prolonged treatment for my animal. The first dog I adopted was also brought back within the 7 day period due to complications and a massive hernia on her incision site. I am not sure what the qualifications are for hiring veterinarians at the KHS Clinic but I think some re-evaluation needs to be done because mistakes such as these should never be happening; I truly wonder how many families have dealt with or given up an animal due to similar circumstances. I was an employee of KHS for 3 years where I gave my heart and I am utterly disgraced at the work being done to animals that are being sent home to families, including my own. I have personally been delivered animals, dogs and puppies specifically, off the transport van that have been infested with ticks, parasites (worms of ALL types), open wounds, terrifying behavioral issues, and infected or open incisions. I've treated countless open wounds and injuries, been bitten multiple times, and picked too many parasites off of animals for KHS to validly say that these animals have been fully evaluated by a vet or behavioral specialists. I have countless experiences reaching out to vet services where I was given no direction, just a quick Rx in the mail for the next day unless it was life threatening. I am well aware of the quality of care these animals receive and it is minimal no matter at what stage of the intake thru adoption process they are located in. I also understand, that at this point, you will not be able to help me or my injured dog due to the limits of the adoption contract (which is only applicable to the adopter in my experiences) but I absolutely will be spreading my growing disappointment with the continuous negligence of the staff and the way this organization "spays and neuters" ALL of its animals so that other potential adopters understand what they need to watch out for when adopting from KHS. I truly believe that KHS has good intentions and benefits the community in a positive manner but there needs to be a quality over quantity factor that comes in to play when so many of these poor animals are being put on the adoption floor with painful, contagious or expensive injuries and illnesses. This is not only painful to the animals who are already traumatized, but to the adopters who see no other option than to return them to KHS, which results in the animal being re-processed and re-adopted, sometimes taking weeks. Although I have seen negligence, I have also seen extreme compassion within KHS which gives hope that these issues can be resolved with more attentive care and action. I am fully expecting an appropriate response addressing...
Read moreWe recently picked up a kitten from Purrfect Day Cat Cafe. The first day, he was great. Eating, drinking, being a kitten. But the following days, he stopped eating and drinking and was very lethargic.
Since Purrfect Day is a partner with KHS, we took him in to get checked out. When you adopt a cat from Purrfect Day, they have a 10 day window that if the kitten starts acting sick, you can take him in to KHS, and they treat them with no charge.
I emailed KHS, and they got back to me within 24 hours and got me in the same day I received the email. There was a little confusion in the email correspondence, and I ended up going to the east campus when I needed to go to Steedly Dr campus. Kind of sucked cause I live in Shively, so the east campus is about a 30-minute drive, and our appointment was between 4 and 5, so traffic was kinda ugly.
It was not too big of a deal, but I was afraid we wouldn't make it back to Steedly in time to get kitty in. Luckily, they close at 6 pm, so I had time to spare.
When we arrived, a nice lady from one of the other buildings on the property let us in the hospital section cause she said it was too hot to wait outside, so that was good, because it was pretty hot. The front desk told the vet tech we were there, and they took kitty back to get checked out. After around 10 minutes, she came out and let us know they wanted to keep him. He was a little dehydrated, and since he wasn't eating, she said they would give him an appetite stimulant and hand feed him. She said we could take him home if we wanted to try to do it ourselves, but we figured they could do it because we didn't want to risk not being able to get him to eat and him get any sicker.
Then we signed papers and left our kitten in their hands.
All in all, it was a decent experience. The people at the Humane Society were friendly and nice. Hopefully, we get our kitty back soon safe and sound.
If you want to adopt a pet, I highly suggest going here or to a partner. You pay a bit to get the kitten, but they come spayed/neutered, microchipped. If anything happens within 10 days, they take care of the health of the animal. I don't know if they offer this at the KHS, but when you get the kitty from Purrfect Day, you also get 30 days of pet insurance in case anything happens after the initial 10 days.
So go get you a new best friend.
Edit* Jaspurr has returned home after 2 weeks of being in the animal hospital. KHS did everything they could to take care of him, and he returned to us a new kitten. I don't know what all they did, but I know he required a blood transfusion, amongst other things. KHS took care of everything. I'm so glad they give you 10 days to make sure the kitties are going to be okay. I'm not sure how much the cost would have been, but I expect out of pocket it would have cost a...
Read moreThe humane society in Louisville KY is a joke. I donât even know where to begin. My ex and I were at our wits ends with each other and in a serious of unfortunate events our puppy was surrendered. We gave the humane society one of the puppys toys, leash and collar. We also payed the extra money to have her have special treatment and extra media coverage. The next day on the website they made our puppy look evil in her picture. We had to contact them to correct it. I have no idea why they would take a picture of a puppy showing her teeth and then writ on her page this puppy needs along of work, will pee everywhere and needs a ton of training. They basically made our puppy out to be the worse dog ever and she is no where near that. After contacting them they finally put decent pictures of her on there and a generic bio. Well later that evening I didnât like how they were treating her so I went and picked her up and I will make it work. When I got there they charged me for shots. Now my dog has all shots and on time. So they gave my dog more shots than she needed. Also when I picked her up she had no toy, no collar, no leash. They kept it. So that tells me that basically donât give them anything because the workers that work for them will just steal from the dogs being surrendered and not let the dogs keep their own belongings. When I contacted them they refused to return my phone calls. My ex had to go down there and all they had was he leash. The Kentucky humane society is a joke, they steal from your animals so they can take home personal items. They half work anything they have and refuse to answer you back about your loved ones. If I was anyone surrendering their pet I would use any other no kill shelter. Also to boot, they labeled my 65 lb puppy a small dog and charged the full amount for a puppy. This is beyond ridiculous. If you need to rehome a loved one never use the...
