It takes an undauntable and good-natured staff to see a customer come in with a cat pee-stained wingback chair that was pulled in off the street two decades ago, a shabby Louis XVI daybed with horsehair stuffing coming out of it, and a desk chair with a child's ink scribbles all over it and to say: How can we help?

Daniel at Zimman's was a fabulous listener. I told him what I envisioned, and he helped me identify just the right fabrics. He's got an extraordinary eye, so when he showed me a silk velvet I would never otherwise have considered, I abandoned my original choice and am so glad I did. That old wingback chair is now a show stopper statement piece. (And Daniel goes down in history for his patience...) The daybed got an elegant update with raw silk. And the desk chair is covered in Napoleonic Bees, right in time for Bastille Day.

Pon, magician upholsterer, not only transformed these three pieces, she also got the fill and feel of each just right.

Whenever I have an upholstery job or need new curtains, I only go to Zimman's. I'm never disappointed. Unique, head-spinning selection; lovely and helpful staff; professional and courteous delivery. I wish cloning were available because I would have Daniel Zimman cloned and installed in every retail outlet I visit.

Somehow, at some point, retail became less about the customer and more about well…not the customer. That was not my experience at Zimman’s.

My husband and I went there on a recommendation from the designer we were working with from Ballard Designs. We arrived late on a Saturday, and while everyone was busy, someone was nice enough to stop and direct us to the section we were interested in.

Virtually before the doors were locked, Daniel Zimman (4th generation Zimman!) approached us to see if there were anything we needed.

From that point on, the experience was wonderful. When there wasn’t enough of the fabric we wanted, he found other samples promptly. He followed up but wasn’t pushy, knew a lot about color and texture so his choices were spot on, and eventually found us a fabric that we loved. A fabric store that has tons of choices and a helpful staff. What more could...

I had my coach recovered at the store. I would give it a good review for the variety of fabrics available, but the reupholstery work on my couch was definitely subpar. There’s threads hanging loose at the end of seam and nails sticking up into the cushion, which I had to call and get them to come fix. Then a year later the webbing they used gave out. The wedding giving out particularly irritates me because I asked for a higher grade of wedding and they told me the one they were using was Really great And the only one that they use. I bought new webbing from an upholstery supplier and asked Simmons to send someone to fix it but they said I’d have to send my couch out to them to get it done. For someone who knows what they’re doing it’s probably a 10 minute job to fix it so I don’t understand why they didn’t just send someone over. I’m disgusted Ted and would never...
