Dear Big Y Customer Service, I am writing to share a concern regarding my repeated experiences at the self-checkout in one of your stores. While I generally enjoy shopping at Big Y, the staff have even gone above and beyond in the past, such as when my wallet was secured and returned to me after leaving it in a cart. I’ve noticed an ongoing issue that makes me feel uncomfortable and unfairly treated. On multiple occasions, I have felt profiled and singled out by certain older female employees while using self-checkout. Despite ringing up my items openly and having nothing to hide, I often notice them watching me more closely than other customers, walking the aisle only once I begin scanning, and hovering as if I am about to steal. Today was particularly frustrating: with only three items, one woman approached me unprompted, pressed buttons on the register, and rushed me through my transaction, even though I had not asked for assistance. The experience made me feel disrespected and treated like a criminal over $14 worth of fruit. In the end, I left my items at the register and went elsewhere to shop. For comparison, I do not encounter this kind of treatment at other stores such as ShopRite or Costco, where I feel like a valued customer rather than a suspect. I want to be clear: I truly value Big Y, and I continue to shop here often. However, this repeated behavior leaves me questioning whether I should avoid self-checkout altogether just to prevent being profiled. If the expectation is that certain customers are directed to regular cashier lines instead, please let me know. I hope my feedback is taken seriously, because I would prefer to continue being a loyal Big Y customer without feeling watched or judged. Thank you...
Read moreSupervisor on duty wasn't going to let me use my oregon ebt card. I had to insist and i told them You have a right to use your SNAP in all 50 states. SNAP is a federal program that is “interoperable” between states. They began treating me like some con artist and honestly i was flabbergasted. The cashier gave the excuse that "they've never seen a card like this before" well of course youve never seen it, its an Oregon ebt card and this is Connecticut..its gonna look a wee bit different lol. I also told them that I may have to type it in manually due to the scratches on the back and they treated me like some criminal and almost turned me away. The supervisor told me that manual entry is not allowed. I had to insist that I use it and if they could just let me swipe it again, I swiped it again, the machine detected the scratches and automatically a manual entry screen popped up and I was able to type it in along with my pin. It's 2023, if the owner of this big y thinks it's okay to treat people who use snap benefits like garbage I suggest they get with the times, educate themselves on the current economic climate and realize most people are struggling. I'm not ashamed. Everyone deserves to eat food. The supervisor who was on duty and treated me like the scum of the earth today on 8/22/23 between 4:30-4:45pm however, should...
Read moreI've been shopping at Big Y in Manchester for over 9 years. As a family of 4, we spend about $1000 monthly. In the recent months, I've seen the quality go down in this particular store. They closed the Little Y Kids babysitting area. I don't know why they would close an amenity that clearly made them different than other grocery stores in the area. We used that service weekly and the staff loved us. I've noticed that products in the produce section seem to be left out on the 'day of' expiration or thereafter. Also, the deli help is very slow. With kids now having to trek throughout the aisles, this makes it very difficult to wait some more at the deli counter for help that moves very slow. Prices have steadily been increasing. And cash register lanes are getting longer. Now with the introduction of no plastic bags, the metal guides for the old plastic bags are getting in the way when trying to bag groceries with your re-usables. This is an oversight on the front desk staff and facility personnel. They should be removed. All in all, there can be no rebuttal for my claims by this store because it is all true and it will be simply side-stepped. I await the opening of ShopRite in Vernon and hope it can become my...
