I wasn’t going to leave a bad review, but after sharing my experience with friends, they urged me to do so: I really wanted to love this shop! My Aunt was so excited for this shop to open. She grew up in Merton & has fond memories of being in this store as a part of her childhood. She was anxious to see updates & if it still looked the same as she remembers. We planned to attend the grand opening, along with my mom & daughter. When we arrived, we sat in the car in disbelief. My Aunt uses a walker & is unable to handle steps/stairs. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any possible way for her to safely go into the shop. There isn’t a ramp. She insisted that we still go in…so reluctantly, we did. It wasn’t really busy. There were 2 other shoppers at that time. No one greeted us. The owner was too busy chatting with her 4 friends & didn’t bother to even look up. After following the shop on social media, I really thought that each customer would be happily greeted & appreciated. But it was the opposite. I made a small purchase, as the owner stood about 5 ft away….still chatting with her friends, she didn’t acknowledge me as a customer. As we opened the door to leave, no one thanked us for stopping by. After we left, an elderly woman nearly fell off the top step by the front door, as there isn’t a railing on the right side of the stairs. My Aunt didn’t miss anything by not being able to get into the store & I feel sorry for any disabled or elderly shoppers hoping to enter, as they won’t be able to safely do so. Before posting a review, I wanted to give the shop a second chance. I went in by myself on a Saturday. Still experienced the same lack of customer service. Made a purchase, but I felt like it didn’t even matter as the owner was too rushed to get back to chatting with a friend that was hanging around. Unfortunately, the shop seems like a social place to gather for the owner &...
Read moreFolklore Mercantile is hard to describe except to share how they do it: "A one-of-a-kind shop in the heart of our historic small town. Inside you will find a thoughtfully curated mix of vintage and antique housewares, clean-label pantry staples from local farms, European and natural skincare, artisan textiles and whimsical finds that bring charm to daily routines." The shop is warm and welcoming, and laid out gently to not overwhelm your senses. It is filled with top-quality items that you cannot find anywhere in the vicinity (and beyond!)." Locally farmed meats for a cozy meal, browsing for a heartfelt gift, or simply soaking in the nostalgia, Folklore Mercantile is a hub for connection, creativity, and the quiet magic of small-town life." That says it all. Stop in and grab a thing or two to sparkle your days.
My only concern is the fact that this shop is not handicap accessible from any of the doors; all have 3-5 steps. I hope this is considered for change in the future. One ramp will open up their business to so many new customers. Edit: I just spoke with the owners about accessibility, and it is not the fault of the owners, but the extreme limitations that the town and DNR have on this property with a historic designation. While the back door and bathroom is ADA accessible, getting up the steps is the issue with the property and permitting. They will be offering online shopping in the future, which should help. In the meantime, they have done all they can with what is allowed. No slam on the owners for this.
Then, head outside to Wisco Joe Coffee Company for a beverage or treat and a place to sit and relax in the beauty of nature. (I will review this one...
Read moreMy new favorite store! I grew up in Merton and I am over the moon that this store has opened up. A great location, a welcoming atmosphere with the kindest owners & staff, and hand picked items that keep you coming back wanting more. You’re bound to find something here to take home! I attended a shopping event there before it was open to the public and I have been hooked ever since. If you’re driving by or considering stopping, you won’t regret it. And with coffee on site? This place is a 10/10. Love...
