Raley's — Local services in Modesto

Was driving back home to Modesto today, from LA with my very pregnant friend in her new car, an electric car. As we planned a stop to recharge we discovered a road closure and and had to keep driving to find the next. The miles were very rapidly declining and in a panic we turned into this raleys parking lot looking for a charging station near the gas station and to our disappointment there were none. At this point we are panicked, it’s 11:00 PM and the mileage has gone down to zero and we found a plug near the side of the entrance in raleys we used the extension cord to plug it in. In no way would we normally think to do this but since it was almost midnight and we didn’t want to be stranded as two females, one 7 months pregnant we did what we could in a panic. The raleys security guard a bald guy, came out and said you can’t use this plug and charge here we explained we are desperate just to get to the next location and he said that’s not my problem let it turn off and roll away. We explained we would be stranded in the middle of the night and he said not my problem you should have planned better if you’re driving all the way from LA. Then an older man who I would imagine is the manager and a younger man come out arms folded. No one asks are we alright, is the very pregnant woman alright or in any assistance they can offer but to stand there and say well you should have planned it better you can’t charge here. It was such a vile display of humanity, I can imagine this isn’t the norm by any means or allowed but I would assume finding two stranded women in a panic would at the very least allow you to ask are you alright is there another way to help. Disgusting and I can’t believe these were all three men employed by a family...

Update (3/20/25): After a year away from the store, visited on three separate occasions to see if self-checkout improved. There was a different cashier monitoring the self-checkout each time and they were all pleasant and helpful. Watched one respectfully inform and help a customer with an alcohol purchase. Huge improvement!

Original post: I've shopped here for many years and, after tonight, we will be taking our business elsewhere. My wife and I completed our shopping in the late evening and were checking out in the empty self-service area. Nothing out of the ordinary until we returned a couple of Nutcher milk bottles. The self-service lady immediately said "you know you're not supposed to do that here. You're supposed to go in the regular checkout lane" with attitude. No "excuse me, sir", no "please next time could you take these to the other lane". I've returned these bottles both in the self-checkout and regular lanes at multiple Raley's locations with no issues until tonight. There are no signs saying not to return them in the self-service area. If they were alcohol, I would understand but they were empty milk bottles. If there was a long line in the self-checkout, I would also understand. The self-checkout was empty and she was busy talking at the security guard (no fault to the security guard at all -- he was actively patrolling throughout the store while we were shopping). Sad that I have to leave this because I literally shop here almost everyday. I come here because its clean. No bad customers really. You'll get them every so often but 90% of the time it's a clean place and safe place to shop. Today I had to run in and grab potatoes for the wife. They have been on sale for 1.47. From 399 pretty cheap. So I ran in punched my # to get the discount and it didnt show. Lady comes up and asked if I clipped it on the app. I said its my wifes app ill have to call her. She voids it and stands over me. I try to call my wife few times no answer. Shes holding the coupon in her hand the whole time. I asked her you cant just override it. She said no sorry its 3.99. I get pissed now. I said thats fine. Paid the 3.99. After that I walk up to a manager and asked her she said yes thats no problem ill just have to void this out and charge you again. I said no thats not the point my question is can you over ride it. She said yes its easy. Bty she is a sweetheart ill post her name later when I get it. So I look at joy amd told her she's a liar and ill post a neg feedback her exact words were thats fine. She should not be a manager. I called the main office and filed a complaint on her there too.
