Extra Space Storage — Local services in New York

I am using Extra Space Storage to house personal items during a transitional move period after finishing a graduate degree and before starting my next job. The process for reserving a space was easy and seamless; I completed the reservation in under ten minutes without issue. Access was equally easy. The staff were all courteous, professional, and pleasant.

The facility itself is clean and readily accessible. My belongings fit into the unit I reserved, and I had no problems whatsoever on the day that I moved my belongings into the unit.

Special praise on the move-in day must be given to Crystal, however. She was, in a word, superlative. When I first arrived, I was a bit anxious and overwhelmed. I had completed an interstate move and had considerable difficulty with my moving company. Crystal helped me find my unit with ease, ensured that the elevators would remain open and usable without a pass until all my belongings had been transported, and remained readily available throughout the process.

What was most impressive, what I most appreciated, and what would incline me to recommend Extra Space Storage with enthusiasm, was how Crystal handled the possibility that my belongings might not fit in the unit I selected. First, on a human level, she was incredibly patient, thoughtful, and kind. She walked with me back to my unit, made a visual estimate of the likelihood of everything fitting, and then presently me with two easily understandable plans for what I would do if my belongings fit and if they did not. She walked with me back to the front desk and explained in detail what she would suggest if they did not fit, keeping me calm and grounded when I was anything but. Again, the move-in experience would have been entirely different had Crystal not been so professional and profoundly human in her response to my worries.

Thank you so much, Crystal, for everything you did that morning. From what I could glean, what you did was merely a reflection of who you are as a person and as a member of the Extra Space Storage Staff. For me, it was deeply kind. Based on our interaction alone, I do not think I would consider storing things elsewhere. In short, Crystal's service won my unimpeachable loyalty as a customer.

Unfortunately this palace and their management fell short. They will raise your rent almost double but tell you to call and we can help before you decide to move your stuff. The manager David claims my unit is online for $233 first floor but when you go online there are not any first floor 10x10. There is a 10x16 first floor for $231. When I tried to speak to David he decided to keep me on speaker while I was explaining that his assistant store manager Stephanie was not helpful at all and actually was insulted me with only trying to accommodate me by taking $33 dollars off. When she heard me she decided to run her mouth in the background like we were in the streets. The only person who was actually professional was kelvin and he is unfortunately no longer there. Instead of the manager David taking me off speaker phone and addressing his employee he let Stephanie antagonize a customer who was already had a bad experience with Stephanie on the phone. I have been with this particular facility for a few years now and I have no clue why the management team has gotten atrocious. Not only was I lied to about pricing but nothing was done to try and accommodate the paying customer. If you look below, you’ll see the review I made for David and ESS a few years ago when my Manhattan storage company went defunct. Even back then, he made it incredibly easy for us to lock in a good price and store our things from a few states away.

Well, he was back at it today! I called because we’re fully moving out of our NYC condo and we needed help again. I was thrilled when David answered the phone because I knew immediately I was in good hands. He helped me Determine what we needed, locking in our unit and its price for the foreseeable future. All on the phone and via an internet contract. It efficient and honestly, just hearing his voice I knew we were well taken care of!
