There are moments in life that you want to enjoy and for those treasured times you want those you love close to you. Well when making the decision on which airline you want your most cherished ones to take I urge all who contemplate this to chose literally anything else other than Spirit Airlines. I am not hard pressed to think we should reinstate horse and buggy as a backup for the foully that is Spirit Airlines. A wedding is nought without a groom and I nearly did not have mine join me for our special day. Spirit cancelled his flight without any alert and he was stranded in the airport as we tried to work with the airline to get him on another flight. They were almost entirely unhelpful. I say ‘almost’ because at least they picked up the phone. They said the next flight to the destination was four days away and more upsetting I was continuously placed on hold so the supervisor could look for ‘options’ that he clearly had the answer to... I know this because I had the answers. Each time the supervisor came back with the most plastic of apologies and offering refunds so we could be offloaded as another problem solved. After waiting in line my husband was able to get a flight from another city to the destination. I warned that they may delay or cancel that flight as well, I had lost all hope and was distraught. He left one city and boarded an Amtrak to another. I thought of how crazy this situation was it could not possibly get worse. I was wrong. After working a full shift, driving to another city then taking Amtrak, Spirit Airlines canceled that flight which was to take place the next day as well. Thinking on his feet he finally cancelled all the Spirit Airline tickets and found a flight leaving from yet another city which required more time on Amtrak. At the same time our friends’ flight was delayed 3 hours the next day, also from Spirit Airlines.
Okay now for some solutions. Spirit Airlines I do not care whether or not you cancel for weather or overbook your flights you have to help your customers. If your canceling for weather you need to have better policies that actually assist your customers. People are not paying for tickets for the joy of it, they are looking to go from point A to point B. This does not change because you abruptly alter or cancel a flight. I am not expecting Spirit Airlines to be on the same level of customer service or have the expertise of larger companies. I do believe that since the company’s line of work has to do directly with people some degree of competence is required.
This trip taught me a few things. First I am defiantly keeping my husband he went through a lot just to make it to my home state for our ceremony. My husband went to 3 major cities ultimately finding a great flight, because of this he canceled our returning flights and booked with another airline. Secondly never will we ever take Spirit Airlines ever again it is an embarrassing company. A great thing is that since our country is for the moment based on a free market system we can refuse to entertain such treatment all together or until polices are created to make the...
Read moreI honestly reviewed everyone else's reviews prior to traveling on July 28th, and i will be honest i was pertrofied. But i can honestly say that i did "not" have a bad experience. I followed through on paying for luggage the night before (roundtrip flying overseas). My luggage was a bit overweight (anything over 40 pds is overweight for them), i still did not mind paying(again roundtrip).Simply because i still saved roughly $300 dollars from flying with any other airline(this includes me and my daughter). My flight was scheduled to leave at 11am from Laguardia Airport, and there was a 30 minute delay"11:30am" is the time that we boarded and took off by 12pm. I am an easy going person, and did not mind that there was a slight delay. The flight was great, i did not purchase anything because i bought snacks(again i did my research), i had an 8pm connecting flight. The only thing was that the gate changed and they announced it.We arrived Costa Rica on time! Returning we had a 12pm flight leaving from CR, we boarded on time. But did not leave until 2pm while inside of the plane they explained there was traffic and that there was only one runway, we arrived in Florida after 8pm. My connecting flight was at 8pm, i was nervous only to find out it was delayed and scheduled to leave at 930pm. The flight attendants were corteous, we arrived in NYC after 2am. That to was a slight delay..again the pilot apologize and stated they were looking for a gate to pull into(people sighed). But again based on what the other reviews were i was not complaining; one of the flight attendants yelled out:"As courtesy everyone received a $50 credit".Lets fast forward to this week, i sent an email to Spirit asking what did that flight attendant mean. I received a very professional email stating that there is a $50 Voucher to use prior to November for me and my daughter to book a reservation. I even asked to extend the expiration date, and she kindly explained that unfortunately it was not possible. A trip can be booked prior not necessarily travel prior to the expiration date. I have to be honest, my coworker also had a great experience coming back to NYC. I guess God was on our side when we traveled with SPIRIT,I will be using them again if possible...
Read moreYou know how sometimes when you're traveling you use the airport monitors to figure out when and where your flight is? Not spirit. Spirit saves money by informing everyone that the flight is an hour late, while actually having it leave sort of on time, cleverly abandoning anyone who stupidly/naively trusted their printed information. When asked about the discrepancy, the gate attendant said (concerning the monitor) "that's wrong, sir." Stupid me. Thankfully my travel partner wasn't listening to music and actually heard the announcement.
Speaking of which, you know how when you buy a plane ticket online, you expect to have a ticket? Not spirit. Spirit designs their website to sell tickets they don't have, so if you're one of those unfortunate souls who bought a not-ticket, you have to wait for the lack of a confirmation email to realize you never bought a ticket and now it's more expensive. Twice. Oops. Silly me. I never wanted that money anyway.
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP (Sorry, that's the disconcerting loud sound I'm hearing from the plane now without explanation.)
You know how sometimes the plane has an emergency and needs to crash land? Thankfully you have the safety booklet in front of you. Oops, never mind. You're flying spirit and the booklet is already ripped to shreds (that's actually how I read best) and you have a concussion from the rock hard seat in front of you, cause cushions are for wimps.
Finally, you know how you're a seasoned traveler and you know at this point that airlines are mostly consistent? Not spirit. Spirit charges extra not only for the second carry-on (honestly, that's fair) and any checked bags (also fair: more weight costs money), but also bags over 42 lbs (dumb), because obviously that number makes sense and is what you'd expect instead of the standard 50. Silly silly me.
All in all my experience with spirit was excellent except for the company, the employees, the plane, and everything else. Would recommend, 10/10.
P.S. Do you like awkwardness? Spirit seats flight attendants in exit rows so they face you. Bring minty gum. And a fake smile, cause it...
