Extra Space Storage — Local services in Newark

I believe this place is running a scam. Ive stored my belongings from my 2/bed 2 /bath condo here since December 2020, only to find out 3 weeks ago that my unit was burglarized. Upon arrival to the storage unit, I noted that another individual was ALSO reporting a burglary, and was told to file an insurance claim. I was told by the worker that they don’t have cameras, so there’s no way to tell who cut my lock and stole my items. My unit is located inside, and you’d need an elevator to get to it. So the likelihood of a complete stranger walking in and out with my items I feel is very unlikely. However, the workers are very aware of the lack of cameras, as well as the fact I am not located in the state to visit my unit regularly. After filing an insurance claim with ESIS (their insurance providers) it’s been more than 2 weeks and I’ve yet to hear anything from the “insurance company”. I’ve read the customer complaints on the BBB website, and it appears everyone is having the same issue as I am with with getting in contact with someone at this company. From my perspective, it appears the employees are robbing units, and customers are unable to be reimbursed due to Extra Space being “insured” by a fraudulent insurance company. The ONLY reason I’m giving this space any stars at all is because of the customer service.

The storage unit itself was poorly managed. You can tell that whoever converted this old factory into storage cared more about making a few quick dollars than providing a quality space to customers. Thank God 90% of my belongings were in plastic bins because I would have lost so much of my stuff to mice and rats. The 10% of my belongings that were in cardboard moving boxes were bit up and covered in rat feces.

The storage unit itself gets 0/5 stars! The customer service, however, gets a 5/5! Dorian and Terrell were EXTREMELY helpful and made an otherwise horrible experience very pleasant.

My advice is: only store your stuff here if it’s in plastic bins and don’t store it for longer than 3 months, MAX!

I honestly can say staff is amazingly helpful. They made moving easy and fast. I needed to transfer units and that process was super easy and hassle free. Tyrell, Eric and the other gentleman is super amazing. They have no problem getting their hands dirty. They were on it! Assisting myself and others with moving heavy items.

The elevator was being used at the time I was ready to leave the unit and Tyrell jumped in. He walked me downstairs carrying the items I was taking with me. I can’t make this up, I’ve never experienced customer service at such magnitude. They don’t know it but I was really having a rough few weeks. Tyrell and his team really helped relieve some of the stress when it comes to moving.

Thank you all for being so pleasant, helpful and just sweet. I’m so happy I decided to come to Extra Space. Please don’t change!
