RAMA COCO AFRICAN HAIR BRAIDING SALON — Local services in Newark

I don’t have enough words to describe how appalled I am by this salon. First of all they have no regard for your time. I had an 11am appointment, and I got there on time. The hairdresser (Agnes) did not start working on my hair until 2pm! 3 hours later! Then when she finished my hair, the cornrows were not aligned properly and they were not tight; and 3 days later they started coming out. Mind you they charge $10 for each braid and I have never heard of that. They charged me $140 for cornrows that did not last for 3 days, a complete scam. The regular salon I go to would have charged me $85 for the same style and it would have lasted 3 weeks because they do an excellent job, I will stick to them and never return to Rama. Then when I called Rama to fix my cornrows, they acted like I was the one who messed up my hair and was trying to pull a fast one, terrible customer service. The owner screamed at me on the phone and even implied that I probably went to the club, and messed up my hair. I don’t know which nightclub is open during covid, I don’t go to the club and it was shocking to hear all these things when all I called to ask for was a resolution to a service that was not done properly to begin with. She reluctantly agreed to fix my hair and when I got to the salon, the attitude I received from Agnes was mind boggling. She screamed at me in front of other customers and said it wasn’t her fault my hair is short. I have had professional hairdressers braid my hair with no complaints and it lasted for a while. And even with the repair Agnes still did not do a good job, it still looks terrible. She was angry and complained the whole time and even told me to come back the following day to finish my hair! Lesson learned, I will NEVER come back here. They even have a poster in their shop that talks about respecting customers, that is laughable especially since they don’t live up to that. Spend your money where people will have regard for your time and respect you as a person. It’s all about the money here, they do not care for customers!

By the way, anyone who is reading this review, please see below for the owner's response. Classy right? :-) Only someone with bad energy and something to hide would respond like this. Why so defensive? Perhaps you should devote all your energy into showing up on time for customers and providing good customer service, do some quality control. I called the day before to schedule an appointment for the next day. COCO told me to come at 9am then quickly changed to 8am. I said ok. The day comes, I arrive at 8am. Gates are down, store is closed! I have COCO a phone call she assured me she was on her way! 8:20am no answer! 8:24 I gave another call she tells me she had a busy night and that she was tired. I say ok, just let me know when you will arrive at your shop. She says 35 minutes. At 9:01am she calls to tell me she will be at the shop soon. At 9:28 she calls and demands I arrive immediately. Upon arriving, COCO is nowhere to be found. I sit waiting 20 minutes. When miss COCO finally begins braiding 45 minutes later, she takes frequent phone breaks approximately every 2 minutes. When I expressed my unhappiness with COCO she and her stylist ridiculed me and proceeded to persuade me into allowing COCO to put braids in my hair that are the size of ropes! my natural hair is braided thin and attached to BIG jumbo weave braids. The braids are simply not neat, far from knotless and the quality is not worth her price of $200. Although I love supporting black owned businesses, this is one I will not return to. I had just started a new job and your appearance matters, but my hair was extremely short due to a big chop. It had grown about 1 and a half inches since April so I thought I would take my chance and try to see if someone can catch it. I googled hair braiding salons near me. She popped up. I visited the website (which is spectacular by the way), I was very intrigued. I needed to get it done right away on Saturday night and called her at 11: 55 pm. To my surprised she answered and was more than accommodating. We were able to step up appointment the next day for 4 in the afternoon. The experience was exceptional. She is warm inviting Lord and behold she was able to catch my short hair. My hair came out better than the picture I wanted. What is even more incredible than her actual gift of hair braiding is her customer service. Her demeanor is everything. I loved every moment of it. Just the atmosphere was different than I ever experienced in a salon. The rooms are design solely by her and are very clean and looked professional decorated.
