Outstanding (and rare) 2.1-mile rubberized running track around Weequahic Lake, plus 400m running track in excellent condition, top-notch lighted artificial football/soccer field, several baseball & softball diamonds in excellent condition, and recently renovated recreation center.
Surprisingly abundant wildlife, including ducks, geese, blue herons, snowy egrets, raccoons, squirrels, opossums, skunks, groundhogs, chipmunks, foxes, deer, and large fish (not sure what species). Quite amazing, actually.
Only downsides are:
Not enough trash & recycling bins around entire length of 2.1-mile running track. Track, surrounding woods, and lake itself are often littered with discarded plastic bottles & trash. Would help to post signs at regular intervals encouraging visitors to dispose of trash & recyclable materials properly, then make it easy for them to do so.
Paved roads through park are in varied condition (some smooth, some rough and rutted with potholes and stones). Shame that only some park roads were paved a few years ago. Smooth pavement everywhere would make it safe to inline skate and cycle throughout the park,...
Overall family friendly and versatile park with something for just about everyone. There are multiple running/jogging trails, lots of workout areas with multi-routine equipment, as well as baseball, soccer, football, and track & field areas. Just a well rounded park for anyone who prefers exercising outdoors, fishing, picnics, or to soak up some sunshine and enjoy nature and fresh air. They also keep building new additions to the park every summer and the park seems to be fairly well maintained. Only issue is that a better job can be done with keeping the park clean, but that is also up to individuals to have pride in their surroundings and use trash cans, so the city certainly can't take all the blame on the cleanliness aspect. There are lots of trash cans though and they are emptied by staff. I'm summary it's a beautiful park that anyone can enjoy. Whether you want to watch people play sports, relax in fresh air and be one with nature, have an intense workout, or just enjoy a picnic with family/friends, you can find...
Read moreWe parked along the serpentine and strode onto the enormous field, a vintage lawn littered with the debris of sportsmanship and exertion. A copse of plane trees warped our trajectory and we veered inexorably to an assembly of arthritic plane trees. The wind blew down on our bodies from all sides as we clutched our lapels to our chest. One of us remarked a bird, who could be seen jogging in the aheads. Our path soon collapsed in upon itself and we were facing our car, distant, minuscule, orderly, which we avoided, making headway to a plastic dock lashed to the riverbank. Spiracled shoots—mostly dead—stippled the bank beyond which the water reasoned out unending ripples under a light drizzle. We straddled the dock and hewed out an invisible valedictory discourse. Our legs learned to wobble the deck and move with it as it hove about with us being gently there. We hugged and stretched our arms and failed to become one another. We soon...
