I just returned today from my dive with Coastal Scuba and it was a really wonderful experience. I am used to diving in the Caribbean so unsure what to expect for my first Atlantic Coast dive.
I was not expecting to dive this weekend as I was in town for business but after reading about Coastal in the hotel binder I decided to check them out. I booked Wednesday night for a Saturday dive and went into the shop to fill out my paperwork Thursday. Cameron greeted me the moment I walked through the door, got my paperwork and took care of me. The other gentleman who finished my check-out process was friendly (I'm sorry I can't remember his name), helpful and walked me through the process for Saturday's dive & where to find the marina.
I rented all the gear this dive and arrived to a very welcome greeting by Cameron & Captain Robert on the Safari IV, who reconfirmed my PADI license & paperwork before checking all my gear (loaded onto the boat for me) as we waited for the rest of the group. It was a larger group (probably 15 or so) on the boat with a few classes/instructors along with the dive masters. They had space cleared up front for the dry bags too!
The crew detailed all the safety measures & precautions with hand drawn diagrams, paired up solo divers with each other, and assisted with drop in either by step or roll in. Not once did I ever feel unsafe as a solo diver. While visibility was low/murky, only about 8-10' feet, one of the dive masters tagged a sight line all the way around the Charleston Tug wreck with additional options out to the tank options to explore.
You and your dive buddy/buddies were then able to explore the wreck freely in your own time (30 mins down, safety stop ascent, 30 min break, 30 min second dive). They also took care of everything after the dives- changing tanks, recollecting/rinsing gear, etc.
I will definitely be back to dive with this crew again! (Please keep in mind that the crew works for tips too! Be sure to bring some cash with you to support them and show your...
Read moreWe were originally booked with another dive charter just five minutes from our place, but they canceled the day before our scheduled dive. Cue my husband going into full rescue mission mode. He remembered someone at our home dive shop mentioning Coastal Scuba, which was about 45 minutes away. So, we decided to make the drive and check them out in person… especially since the vibes at the first shop were off (and let’s be real, vibe checks are crucial when it comes to dive days).
From the moment we walked in, Sarah made us feel right at home. Literally putting down her pickles to give us a full rundown on their charter, the dive site, and how everything works. She even invited us to hop on their boat the next day, which just so happened to be our original dive day. We left the shop with zero doubts and actually got excited again for our trip underwater.
Let me tell you! expectations: exceeded.
From valet gear service (yes, please), to easy check-in, a solid dive briefing, and just all-around good boat energy, the Coastal crew nailed it. Sarah, Bianca, Charlie Brown, Captain Kevin, Braxton (hopefully we got that name right!), and anyone else we may have missed were all incredible, welcoming, knowledgeable, and never once made anyone feel rushed or like they didn’t belong, no matter your experience level.
And don’t even get me started on the post-dive gear rinse. Chef’s kiss.
We had amazing viz on our dive to The Sherman, where we explored tons of wildlife (think barracuda and schooling fish) and some really cool wreckage you could actually swim through. It was the kind of dive that reminds you exactly why you fell in love with this sport.
We cannot wait to dive with Coastal Scuba again and if you’re looking for a shop that blends professionalism with fun, look no further. 10/10...

A few weeks ago I booked my Advanced Open Water dives with this shop. I explained my situation thoroughly through the phone and called 4 times to add rentals and make sure I paid everything in full. I was told everything was paid and I was good to go. A couple of days before the trip I called again to confirm the location, and during this call I spoke to a woman at the front desk/shop. I had a good experience with my phone calls until this last one with her. She immediately treated me with disrespect solely based on how my voice sounded on the phone, with no prior knowledge of who I was. She proceeded with a derogatory tone saying: “you know that you still haven’t paid your instructor fees right? You know you can’t just dive with your boyfriend right? You have to pay your instructor otherwise you can’t go”
At no point during any of those phone calls I had mentioned a boyfriend, she just assumed that from me having paid for two people. It’s not so much what she said, but how she said it, that was very disrespectful, especially after I had already paid $639 for the whole trip. I wouldn’t have minded paying an extra $55 for the instructor fees if this had been brought up during my previous phone calls or if she hadn’t been disrespectful to me. I was looking forward to seeing the Charleston Tug and Pinnacle Reef sites, but I went ahead and cancelled the trip because of this.
My husband was also very upset while hearing everything on speaker and I don’t condone what he said to her, but that doesn’t take away the fact that she initiated the whole ordeal.
Wish I had asked for her name, I believe she was an expert on the fishing side of the shop more than the...
