Franz Jewelers Ltd — Local services in Northfield Township

First, I must say that I have been going to Franz Jewelers for decades, albeit for small things - watch batteries, watch bands, etc. and it's always been a good experience. This review concerns my most recent visit.

I purchased a new watch from the web, the case and bracelet both titanium. I brought it in to have some links removed. I could see as it was being worked on in the workshop area that that the handling was less delicate than if I were doing it myself, but I'm not a watchmaker so I defer to their expertise.

When the watch was returned to me it had several noticeable scratches. I pointed this out, saying the watch was brand new, never worn, still enclosed in a protective coating, and didn't have any scratches when I brought it in. Instead of an apology, I was told titanium was a soft metal, prone to scratches, and it would get scratched in the course of wearing it anyway. I said I would have preferred that I have the privilege of putting the first scratches on it myself rather than pay someone to scratch it for me. By way of analogy, if I brought a new car to the dealer to be serviced and they scratched it, I wouldn't expect them to say nothing more than it was going to get scratched sooner or later.

I'm not a watch expert, but if the watch band is that delicate, it would be great to be advised before the repair that it could be damaged, not after the fact when it's too late. No apology, no other concession, just some polish to make the scratches less prominent after I complained. Disappointed, this was not the service model I expected or...

I went to Franz Jewelers to see if they could repair my wife's antique wedding ring. The damage was significant and of course I was worried the repair could damage the ring further. They clearly explained what it would take to do the repair and the timeline. I was extremely pleased with the outcome. They restored the ring to predamage condition. It was perfect. Other jewelers refused to attempted the repair due to the engravings and inlaid stones in the band while fixing the main stone setting but Franz Jewelers reassured me of their experience and delivered high quality work.
