This is a great place for romantic or relaxed conversation. Music is generally what I would describe as soft rock or country, each table having a candle lit with clean glasses and dim lighting all around - coming in through the doors was a little disorienting as it was bright outside and comparably very dark inside until your eyes adjust.
The individual greeting us at the door was very welcoming and calm, a different experience as opposed to a busy restaurant with excited staff briskly leading you to a booth or table, immediately setting a more comfortable mood and admittedly a little odd as I'm not used to such a nice entrance. The seating is comfortable and the tables a very dark oak color, the silverware heavier than it looks and smooth, making it a little difficult to handle but that might just be the way I hold a fork and knife.
Our waiter was kind, professional, funny, and quick throughout our entire visit. His name was Scott, dressed and groomed for the part, a man that was comfortable to ask questions and talk with. The drink menu is large, six full pages if I recall correctly; a large assortment of wine and whiskey, as well as other alcohol. Our drinks were fantastic, both the taste and display - unique glasses depending on what you order, frozen grapes for the raspberry margarita, a few tables down the wine glasses looked pretty interesting, makes you want to order other drinks to see what they make for you.
The food tasted just as good. Specifically I had the chicken: well done, mashed potatoes with a soft but slightly chunky texture, some delicious flavors both sweet and tender that come together. The desert is no less flavorful, both the creme brulee with its sweet vanilla taste and cinnamon roll pudding outdoing other restaurants making the same thing. Honestly a treat for the end of our meal.
Supposedly bread is served earlier on, which would go well with the soup, but we did not have any given to us. I could be wrong with whether or not it is served with specific dishes or placed on the table regardless. I also did not receive a second drink after being offered one, which let me down a bit before I had the sweet desert. Minor issues that stuck out but didn't ruin the experience, and I would definitely give this another chance with all House 406 has to offer.
Would recommend for anyone wanting to treat themselves, as not all menu options are pricey, and the drinks really complete the meals if you're okay with some that have a larger price. At first glance not a large selection of food, but within each category there is a variety that should appeal to almost everyone who might have a finicky taste like me. Planning on coming back with some close friends to show them this unique,...
Read moreWeâve been loyal customers at this Northbrook restaurant since it openedâdining here nearly every week for over a decade. Sadly, after our last visit, we wonât be returning. We arrived around 7:00 PM and were seated promptly, but thatâs where the good service ended. It took 15 minutes for anyone to take our order, and another 20 minutes for drinks to arrive. After that, we were completely ignored for over an hourâno one stopped by to check on us, refill water, or offer the usual bread and butter. When we finally flagged someone down at 8:20 PM (an hour after ordering), the server seemed irritated by our question and brushed off our request for bread. No apology, no explanation. Our foodâjust saladsâarrived at 8:30 PM with no acknowledgment from the server, just plates dropped silently on the table. Even more disappointing was that the Jennifer-the owner was there, move liquor bottles at the bar-clearly aware of what was happeningâand did absolutely nothing. No greeting, no apology, no attempt to make things right. For years, the staff knew us so well that we barely had to orderâtheyâd simply ask, âHaving the usual tonight?â That kind of personal service is what made this place special. Unfortunately, this visit was a complete 180. Weâve seen the service decline gradually, but this last experience was the final drop in the bucket. Letâs talk about pricing: appetizers are now well into the double digits, and entrĂ©es range from $50â$80. And thatâs fineâif the experience, atmosphere, and service live up to it. But when the staff is disengaged, the owner is indifferent, and the dĂ©cor hasnât been updated in over a decade (sagging chairs, scratched tables, and a tired feel), it simply doesnât add up. Over the past 10 years, weâve watched the prices rise by 50%âand still, we never complained. We always left a generous tip and tried to support the business however we could. As residents of Northbrook for over 40 years, weâve always made a point to support local establishments. But sadly, weâll be taking our business elsewhereâsomewhere that still values its customers and remembers that...
Read moreMy husband and I drive to Northbrook on a Monday night from normal Il on our way to a luxury hotel and we decided to stop by this place for a nice dinner. The environment was nice, it was quiet ( but frnchescas next door had a lot of people in it) and the seating was along a booth. They had candles lit which was nice and the servers were on top of everything. I decided to order the beef prime rib - medium and my husband had the braised short ribs. The prime rib was 68.00 and a Heineken was 12.00, the short ribs 26.00. The wait was not very long and like I said, the waiters were consistent on our refills...but when the steak came out it was sitting on a bed of fries that looked like they were from Steak ân Shake , very greasy and served with catsup! Yes, thatâs right-ketchup, catsup....however youâd want to spell it, and NO STEAK SAUCE. Nothing else, for 68.00! Come on! Youâd have to wipe my face for me to want to pay that for a steak and only a steak. It should have a potato or something and I had to order 8.00 side of asparagus with it. My husbands food was served on a bed of mashed potatoes and not terribly priced, but it just wasnât good tasting. I did not read the reviews, I still havenât but I wanted to make sure that people know this is a high priced place but you donât get what you pay for. I wonât go back - not for the...
