Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Hale'iwa with the SUP Dog crew was an outstanding experience and one of the highest highlights of my North Shore journey. The Anahulu River is a beautiful spot to go out for a nice leisurely paddle all on its own, but throwing a bunch of rescue dogs into the mix really lets the fun off-leash!
Tyler is a wonderful guide, and has plenty of entertaining stories to share about Hale'iwa, Hawaii and the Anahulu in particular. His infecious enthusiasm and supportive positive attitude offer just the right amount of encouragement to start beginners off right and/or sharpen the skills of more experienced boarders. Whether it's your first paddle or your hundredth, Tyler will make it a whole bag of treats.
But of course, the SUP Pups will always steal the show! Phoenix, Dobby, Sandy, and Yuki were the canine crew for my SUP excursion, and we all had a blast on the river together. Their goofy dog antics and waggy wiggle-butts were the perfect enhancement to an already gorgeous O'ahu morning. There were turtles and trees and sights to see, but having the dogs along for the ride multiplied the joy at every turn.
Bringing a few morsels of leftover pork chop that I'd saved from the previous night's grilling to share with my new friends may have eased my welcome into their pack. Once we pushed off the dock, all four SUP Pups were clamoring to come aboard. Of course, I was more than happy to host the party!
I loved my first SUP Dog experience so much that I signed up for a dog surfing lesson a few days later. I've taken a handful of lessons before, but am still very much a beginner. I'm barely able to stand up on the board solo, much less with the extra challenge of a doggo on deck, so I wasn't entirely sure how things would work out.
Thankfully, Tyler brought Poke along to help me refine my nascent wave-riding skills. I can't say for certain whether Poke's instruction made me a better surfer, but his obvious love for all things spherical and nautical definitely enabled me to enjoy the ocean's splashy embrace. It was an honor to repeatedly sacrifice myself to Poseidon for the glory of Poke.
All-told, I wouldn't have missed SUP Dog for the world. I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.
There are lots of fun things to do on O'ahu, but none are more fun than SUP Dog! If you are a dog person, or even dog-person adjacent, definitely add SUP Dog Hawaii to your...

I can’t recommend SUPDog enough—what an incredible and unforgettable experience! Not only was the paddleboarding itself fun and relaxing, but the best part? They brought the dogs! Yes, actual paddleboarding pups ready to join in on the adventure. And every poi dog has his/her own story that Tyler shared about their rescue ❤️. We loved Poke and Diamond and how Tyler’s family adopted them.
Tyler at SUPDog was so friendly, organized, and clearly passionate about what he does. The boards were super stable, easy to use, and perfect for sharing with a four-legged friend.
The real magic, though, came from the dogs. They were playful, well-behaved, and clearly loved being out on the water just as much as we did. It was impossible not to smile with dogs lounging on the boards, jumping in for a swim, or just riding along like furry little pros. It was the kind of joyful, lighthearted experience you don’t forget.
If you’re looking for something unique, dog-loving, and full of good vibes, SUPDog is where it’s at. Already looking forward to my next...
Read moreWhat an amazing experience! I went to SUPDog with my wife and child to do paddle boarding with the dogs. We had never paddle boarded before and we were nervous 1) that we would keep falling in the water and 2) dogs being on the board with us would make it much more difficult. Our instructor taught us everything that we needed to know for it being our first time and it turned out to be such a fun time. Paddling up and down the river with the dogs in our boards and seeing some beautiful sights in Hawaii felt surreal. We even saw several huge turtles swimming in the river as well. We all picked it up very quickly (thanks to the instructor) and the dogs probably helped us keep our mind off of falling into the water. It really was a magical experience that we will all remember for a very long time. The dogs were super friendly and behaved so well on the paddle boards. It really added to the entire experience. I definitely highly recommend this fun activity if you are a dog lover or interested in paddle boarding. Thank...
