Historically white settlers brought to the valley the usual development that they used in the encroachment of the west - farming, ranching, commercial development, in addition to tourism. Today only tourism and rock climbing survives but the deceased from the 'settlement' era are interred in the Yosemite Cemetery. Most of the graves are modest and quite a few are unnamed. It is located across the street and just west of the Yosemite Museum. Buried here include Native Americans, casual park visitors, and people who played important roles in the development of what is now Yosemite National Park.
