The Fish Barn in Orinda is hands-down one of the best local fish stores I’ve ever come across. They’ve got everything an aquarium enthusiast could need—UNS-branded tanks, great prices on chemicals, equipment, substrates, and all the essentials. They even go above and beyond with premium, well-made supplies that really stand out.

Yes, their fish are a bit on the pricier side, but you can see why. The passion and care they put into everything is evident. Their display tanks are stunning—clean, vibrant, and leagues ahead of what you’d find at most other stores, especially the big-box chains. They also quarantine all their fish, which is such a huge deal for anyone who’s serious about this hobby. It minimizes issues and ensures the fish are healthy before you take them home. Plus, their selection is phenomenal, including rarer varieties like jelly bean tetras, dwarf neon rainbow fish, and some gorgeous gobies.

I also have to give a shoutout to Jay and AJ. They’re both incredibly knowledgeable and always willing to share tips or insights about the stock they carry. Their expertise has been so helpful, and it really sets this store apart. The plants selection is easily one of the best I’ve seen—tons of options for building the perfect aquascape, labeled by color code for Co2 usage or not or maybe.

I’ve personally bought well over 100 fish from them, and only one didn’t make it—which is practically unheard of in this hobby. And something I really respect is that they don’t sell fish to homes where they won’t be properly cared for. It’s so refreshing to see a store that values the welfare of their animals as much as their customers.

This shop is truly a boutique experience—clean, well-organized, and stocked with high-quality products you don’t typically find at big-box stores. This place is by far my favorite fish spot in the bay! The staff is incredibly helpful and the owner is super nice. He takes a vested interest in all of his customers' success. Recently he helped me save a fish from Columnaris, which is actually an incredibly difficult thing to do. He helped me set up a hospital tank for her, find appropriate meds and adjust when she wasn't getting better. If you need anything aquarium related make sure you check out The Fish Barn.
