I would have rated this store highly for its excellent selection and support for valuable organizations (like Clearwater Academy) if I hadnât been insulted by the cashiers.
I am what would be considered âhigh functioning autistic.â The store was busy and loud, so I had noise-cancelling headphones on. While waiting in the checkout line, I was rocking back and forth a bit to soothe myself, because I was overwhelmed by the noise and crowds. This is relevant to the rest of the review.
My partner went ahead of me to check out while I waited with my sister, but I had forgotten to give something to my partner and ran up to give it to her before rejoining my place as next in line. While I had been doing so, the people in line behind me moved up, bringing the line past the yellow line on the floor. When I returned, the cashier closest to the line told me, âthe line starts behind the yellow line.â I didnât understand what she meant. I thought maybe she assumed I was cutting in line and wanted me to go to the back, so I responded that I had just moved to hand something to my partner. She said, âI know. You need to move behind the yellow line.â At this point I processed what she was trying to communicate and turned to move back, only to realize that the people behind me in line were also in front of the yellow line and werenât moving, keeping me stuck. I turned back to her, at which point she repeated herself loudly. I turned around and told the people behind me in line, âshe means everyone needs to move back so we can be behind the yellow line.â Everyone moved back, and I stood behind the yellow line.
I thought all was well at this point. However, unbeknownst to me, the cashier then turned to another cashier and said, âSheâs a bit simple, isnât she?â in a rude tone, and the other cashier verbally agreed. My partner was checking out and heard all of this. In my opinion, she said this because I was visibly autistic and I took a few moments longer than she would have liked to process and respond to her instructions. It does take me longer than other people to process things in noisy or overstimulating environments.
This store claims to support organizations and schools which cater to people with disabilities. In fact, one of my little sisters also has autism and attends one of the schools they donate to, which is how I know that some autistic students volunteer or work at the store. Given this, I am appalled and disappointed that the staff thought it was appropriate to openly refer to me as âsimple.â I think âsimpleâ is a deeply offensive way to refer to anyone, especially if you suspect someone has a developmental disability or intellectual disability. The cashier said it casually and in front of customers, and her coworker agreed with her, suggesting this kind of language is accepted and even common. This is unacceptable, particularly in an environment that claims to be inclusive for...
Read moreCame back to take away my five stars and edit this. I have always loved this thrift store. One of the cashiers I really enjoy talking to, and there is another woman on the floor who is so incredibly nice and helpful. My last experience there, however, was terrible. There is an extremely rude woman who works there, and I have seen her be rude to someone else before (months ago). I honestly donât know what her problem is, but she made me so uncomfortable, that I put my stuff back and left. Next time I go in, Iâm going to try and get her name. I had wanted to inquire about a shelf on the floor, It didnât have a price on it so I wasnât sure if that meant it was sold or if it was just yet to be priced. I asked someone who couldnât care less to help me out and she finally did and came back and shrugged her shoulders and basically said âweâre not sure if it sold or notâ. I really was interested in this because Iâm redoing my bathroom, so I asked someone else on the floor and she was so nice, she went and asked the same lady that the other woman had asked, which I can tell because this rude woman comes stomping over with her, in the most annoyed tone ever & looks at me full of literal rage and then condescendingly tells me that itâs a two-piece set. Very quick and harsh. There was a piece of tape that said 1/2 on the top of it, but Iâve never stocked a floor before, so I thought that couldâve been from the person who donated it or that it couldâve been that there were two of these on the floor. I literally wasnât sure. It was supposed to go with a secretary desk apparently (even though they were two different color wood tones, and they were not Placed in a way they looked like they went together all). All I needed was some quick clarification. It was honestly not a big deal. I was very polite. I was just inquiring about it because I wanted to buy it. Itâs as simple as that. The nice woman that was helping me said â Well, maybe we can see if it can be purchased separatelyâ And she shouts to the rude woman ( Because the rude woman was just very quick and harsh and already walking away ) âcan she just buy this pieceâ Which was very nice of her, but I already knew I would never ask that awful woman that question. Still, the bitter lady looks at me like she cannot believe that that question is being asked and tells me âabsolutely not. You can buy both or nothing at allâ like wow lol. It just had to be said how rude she is, I almost left a comment from what I saw months ago, but forgot at that time but she was rude to somebody who was looking for something in the...
Read moreI recently visited this thrift store and was very pleased. The staff is abundant throughout the store and very helpful. They have a wide selection of clothing and are reasonably priced. They have a section for the younger generation who is interested in thrifting. This section is divided into multiple styles such as: boho, dark academia, light academia, goth and a few more. They have a maternity section, however it is very small. They have a huge selection of wedding dresses, formal wear and tuxes for men. If you are interested in thrifting for items other than clothes then this is the place for you. They have a huge selection on furniture, housewares, books, movies, tools...etc. Everything in this store is very well organized and placed. Stock seems to rotate frequently. I didn't give it five stars because you have to pay extra special attention to the pricing on items. The shopping carts indicate the price based on the color sticker, however it does say "Unless otherwise marked." Lots of items are "otherwise marked" so you need to double check everything to make sure you know what price you are paying. That was my only drawback because it can be confusing because of how items are grouped together. Other than that, I highly recommend this store if you need a good thrift trip! I...
