Great selection! Tons of really nice used books. Art books galore even in the used section... and in really good shape. Prices ok. If you are from out of the area, please know that the nearby eateries offer restroom facilities but at this bookstore, you will have a porta-potty as your only option for using the bathroom. I really needed to use the restroom and was directed to the outhouse porta-potty. DISGUSTING!!!!!! Poop caked all over the rear portion of the " toilet" seat. Flies swarming. I gagged and nearly vomited as I fled. The second porta-potty was only marginally better, with less fecal mounding on the seat but tons of trash and other debris shoved in what was probably the urinal feature. I can't confirm that because I was too busy trying not to retch in public. I hurried to the little diner across the street/ thoroughfare and God bless the woman who directed me to that site's restroom. I used it and planted money in her palm as I exited the establishment. I cannot in my wildest dreams imagine that the staff of the bookstore or the little cafe in the corner of it is required to use the sh*thole posing as a restroom. I'm offended that nothing better was offered to customers. I did offer feedback at the cashier station and the employee began her rebuttal with "I am SO tired of hearing about this from customers...!" I replied with " then DO something about it! Petition your own council for something better!" And I thought "... or ( gasp!) allow patrons to relieve themselves in the same place you do!!! My rating is based on the store's selection. If I factored in the restroom situation, this place would have...
Read moreWonderful experience! Let's be frank: there are a myriad of small bookstores in Southern New Hampshire, but I believe that three aspects make them sensational: customer engagement, associate knowledge, and a unique experience/location. At Toadstool Bookshops, you get an amazing location in downtown Peterborough on the river, wrapped up in an eclectically decorated store, with some of the most experienced and kind associates I've ever met! I was browsing the new books and asked for a price check. Right away the girl at the register checked to see if there was a lower price on a used copy. Fantastic knowledge and engagement. The shop is split into multiple sections, but you can tell when you arrive at the used book shop. Along the entirety of the ceiling are model aircraft from various timeframes! While browsing the used books, I was blown away by all the super cool planes and the sheer number hanging from the rafters was staggering. I purchased four books and joined their loyalty program - I highly recommend this. Lastly, there is something that makes Toadstool go from excellent to legend: their online site. Navigating to toadbooks.com gets you access to their entire catalog (give or take as books move quickly!). I was impressed by the website's layout and interaction with the user: tons of activity to check out and easy to search your favorite books. If you find yourself in Peterborough, NH go, at least, for the experience! I am a huge fan and will be supporting them through both their website and storefront that is easy to locate and park by historic downtown...
Read moreAlthough I was sad to see the Milford location close, and I look forward to the Nashua store to open, I wanted to take advantage of some very limited free time on this visit to New Hampshire to stop at The Toadstool Bookstore. I enjoyed a beautiful drive to Peterborough, which added pleasure to my morning. As always, the staff is knowledgeable and professional, and quick with suggestions. This store has titles on every subject and point of view. An interesting used book section allowed for even more varied perusal. Whether you are a local resident or you are just passing through the quaint town of Peterborough, avail yourself the pleasure of a visit to the Toadstool Bookstore. You'll be...
