Walked in and the place barely had any curly hair products and wigs, but it had a great deal of braiding hair. As I shopped, the woman behind the counter asked me if I was looking for something and I said yes, however, I knew they didn’t have what I wanted due to the scarcity of hair products. I told her I was looking to see if the store carried Camille Rose, then she proceeded to ask me if it was some biracial hair brand…. I was bewildered by her comment. Now, if you know anything about hair, then you know that Camille Rose is one of the most famous hair care brands for the natural community. Second, I was greatly confused on why she categorized my hair based on my appearance. She didn’t even know what my hair texture was. I guess it was apparently biracial. Is biracial hair not similar to black hair? What even is her definition of biracial hair. Not all black people have 4c just as not all biracial people have 3b. I definitely won’t be shopping at such an ignorant...
Read moreI walked in with my 14 year old son today to get a twist sponge. I moved to Maine from Mass 9 months ago and I had to stop for a minute when I opened the door because it felt so damn GOOD to be in a BLACK space again. Everybody was smiles and greetings as I looked over to see the barber doing his thing, Mama over there doing her thing, and babygirl who promptly assisted us with a warm smile. It was our first time visiting and we took a minute to look around at all the things I haven’t seen since I left Mass. Many styles of weave, colors and products, much of which was out of stock cause it’s clear that this is a legit spot for whatever culture you need. Don’t get me wrong I love and appreciate “the good ones” but I’m commenting on the feeling of belonging that I felt, something I don’t feel in most places here. As a Black woman with waist-length locks I felt at home here. Out of stock items are expected next week and our transaction was quick, in and out in 7 minutes. I absolutely recommend this spot and sadly we’re leaving next week and I wish we were staying long enough for an appointment with the barber. Shout out to...
