I've never met someone in sales so willing to throw away a deal over a few hundred dollars. I contacted Poway Powersports about a bike a week back and promptly received a text from JB. After exchanging a few messages with JB, he insisted I come in to "make a deal." Working a high stress job, and having dealt with plenty of other dealers via text and email, I was reluctant to carve time into my busy schedule.
I decided that I would stop by on my lunch break to gain some rapport and show my face as another human being. My text messages back and forth was not leaving me with the best impression so I figured why not. After that interaction with JB, I had high hopes and felt like we had a way forward.
Fast forward a few days and I was ready to make a deal. I texted JB my counter offer, to which he replied with "Just bring a check Friday. I'll get the bike prepped. Yes." This emphatically reads, I agree and see you then where I am from. Mind you, my offer was $491 less than their first initial offer. We're not talking about low balling here. Cash in hand and ready to go.
I replied with the time I would be there and later confirmed the next day I would be there and looking forward to seeing him.
When I arrived at the dealer, I was informed that he miss quoted my price and that the new price would be $200 more than what I offered and he agreed to. He claimed that he looked at the wrong line and that we could just run my debit card for the difference.
To say I was disappointed was an understatement. He also tried claiming he never agreed to the price. Then when I walked back he said, well we can sell it to you at that price if you buy our warranty. To which I responded how betrayed and lied to I felt. Ready to walk, he calls the owner Melo and lo and behold, he can sell it at the agreed price. If I didn't want the bike so bad, I would have just walked away.
Having worked in sales, if you make an honest mistake you own it and make the customer happy. Not wait to spring it on them when they arrive. This is a wonderful way to taint what should have been a happy experience. I can say that I would never go back here again for another purchase.
The right thing? Call the owner, do whatever it takes and own your mistake. Don't try and pass that to the customer. Also, make sure you ask for all your accessories. Had I not pressed for it, I would have also left missing an entire box of parts including my tool kit.
Take your business elsewhere unless you want slimy, shady dealer tactics...
Read moreExceptional place to get a bike and gear! I was a first-time rider, looking to get a motorcycle and in SD, you’ve got the usual suspects: Fun Bike Center, Motoworld, North County, and the like. However, I discovered this place after driving by it a few months ago. This a new shop with a new(!) policy: no set-up fees and sometimes, no freight fees! I emphasize this because as a new rider, I didn’t know about the additional fees associated with buying a bike: I thought it was like a car, where you’ve got your sticker price, some delivery fee already calculated into the sticker price, and the usual tax+doc+reg fees. But with a motorcycle, you have to add quite an amount for a “setup fee” - a charge that you have to pay for in order for the dealer to take the bike out of the crate and build it (not from scratch, but there’s some bits (like wheels or handlebars) that need to be put on). If this fee was a fair amount, fine, but the setup fees are usually crazy - for example, the $4,400 Rebel 300 I was looking into has a setup fee of $575 at FBC and $1,028 at Motoworld (these places aren’t mean-spirited AT ALL, their staff is nice, it’s just their way of doing business), making any haggling/discount still leave the bike costing more than the base price. Poway doesn’t do that, thankfully, and I saved a lot of money on my bike. This shop already gets 5 stars for this... making bike buying the way it should be.
But wait! There’s more! It’s more than just the no-setup, policy, the staff here is nice and welcoming and will try to help you out if you don’t give them a hard time. Parts come quick, the gear selection is good (and you can order what isn’t on the floor) and nobody is pressuring you to buy this bike RIGHT NOW; they know you probably already want it lol. To conclude, it’s places like this that make people love small business: good people selling you good products for a good price, all with a homey/community vibe: I’d reccomend this place in...
Read moreI dont always take the time to write reviews but I felt compelled this time because I had polar opposite experiences yesterday when out shopping for a new bike and these guys deserve some big kudos. LADIES, if any of you have ever shopped for a new vehicle on your own, you can feel me when I say it's normally a nightmare experience. Pushy sales dudes trying to take extra advantage and very little respect when we want to take time to think. This was NOT my experience here. Dustin was who helped me, and he answered all my questions and then some, ran some basic numbers on the bike I was interested in and came back with a great offer. He didn't try to upsell something I didn't want and most importantly: he RESPECTED me and my choice to want to shop around just a bit more because they were the first store I went to. He of course tried to secure a price that would make a sale right then and there, but when I wanted to head on to do more shopping I wasn't harrased with a ton of price haggling. I went to what is likely one of their biggest competitors here in town, and it was the exact opposite experience. Nice sales guy there, but then the haggling started. I said FIVE times I wanted to think about things because honestly, I was just shopping around and while I could outright buy a bike I'm not in any rush. Unfortunately I was pressured every time I wanted to walk out, to buy a bike right then. A typical high pressure sales pitch that soured my bike shopping experience. I am going to head back to Poway Powersports today and do a more thorough negotiation on the bike I was interested in because, whether a sale is processed or not, my initial shopping experience with them has earned my respect. Thank you Dustin for making my shopping experience so enjoyable yesterday and...
