An excellent homebrew store with just about everything you could need. I spent 4 hours in here just looking at all the gadgets and walked out with a Catalyst fermenter, all-grain conversion kits for 10 gallon igloos, a custom-made maple, ash, and cherry wood mash paddle, and my first all-grain batch that I brewed yesterday and hit the OG perfectly, a Snow Cap clone. Jon is easy to talk to and very knowledgeable, I mentioned I had just brewed a Heady Topper clone and he pulled out his personal notes on the 3 he's done. We talked hop and grain substitutions, and he pointed out the Imperial Barbarian yeast he has which is from the same strain the Alchemist uses for Heady Topper. I will be back to get that. (P.S. buy his Hopshots so they stay on the shelf!) He also has things like Spiegelau glasses and T-shirts to really round out the selection. One thing I would add is a RDWHAHB bumper sticker, I'd buy that. If you live in Milton or Puyallup and you're used to driving a long way to get to Beer Essentials over in Tacoma, go no further, this is the place for you. P.S. Jon leverages his prices against those on Amazon so you're sure to get a fair price, even though Amazon doesn't have to pay overhead expenses like a small business. Please support your local homebrew store so he...
Read moreThis past summer Jon came down to San Diego for a Home Brew conference. He and his wife met us (his former customers) for a beer and to catch up!
During our discussion we mentioned to Jon that we have had a lot of trouble with the poor quality water here and its effect on our beer. We had tried various forms of filtering, dilution, salts, etc. - all with little success.
We were so disappointed in our last few beer batches that we were ready to give up the hobby altogether.
During our discussion, Jon suggested a book called Modern Homebrew Recipes by Gordon Strong. He remembered that this book starts every recipe with RO water and adds salts as necessary for each style of beer.
It was a simple suggestion with nothing in it for him personally, but this has been a game-changer for us, and by following the water treatment suggestions in the book, we are brewing excellent beer again. On tap right now in our home is a beautiful Hazy IPA, a Coconut Porter, and a Honey Ale - all excellent quality.
The value of a Local Home Brew Shop is so much more than just having supplies and equipment available locally for retail sale. Jon is an expert. He knows his stuff, and we are so grateful that we can continue to make great beer down here...
Read moreThis is the only home brew store I’ll use!
Jon has been nothing short of amazing every time I visit. As a business owner I know that he has 1000 things to do every day, but he always makes time to answer all my questions, and help me through any problems I may have. I don’t get the feeling I’m wasting his time, and he doesn’t try to oversell me on stuff I don’t need. He listens, asks questions to make sure he understands my situation, and makes appropriate recommendations. He has even been a great resource over the phone for any quick questions I have.
The selection in the store is great, Jon is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, and the prices are very reasonable.
This is where I would direct anyone interested in home-brewing,...
