Fore River Bridge — Local services in Quincy

The Fore River Bridge carries Route 3A over the Fore River between Quincy and Weymouth. The current lift bridge opened to traffic in 2017. It carries two 12-foot lanes each way along with a 5-foot bike lane and 9-foot sidewalk on both sides. The navigable clearance under the bridge is 250’ wide and 60’ vertical in the closed position.

The current (new) bridge is the third movable bridge at this location, it opened to traffic in 2017. The first bridge from 1902 was a swing bridge and it was replaced in 1936 by a bascule bridge. In the late 1990's the 1936 bridge was found to be badly deteriorated and in 2002, traffic was directed off it and onto a temporary steel lift bridge. In 2004, the 1936 span was demolished. Very nicely redone. I have not been on the bridge in a long time. Unfortantly my luck i was there right before bridge went up. It was nice to see. Watched bridge raise and a hugh boat went thru while i was waiting. I will try to attach a video of where i was located. The size if the boat explained why i was there for about 15mins.
