Been shopping here for years. Have never gotten a single smile from any of the workers here especially at self checkout. Matter of fact they've gone out of their way to be unfriendly and rude. You'll notice most of the staff here never even smiles! You can tell they hate their lives and their jobs. I can't remember a single time when somebody who worked here was actually friendly or helpful. Mind you I shop here 3-4 times per week. But NO MORE. Tonight was the last straw. Here's what happened....
I was at the self checkout and the guy working self checkout LITERALLY saw me pay for all my items. He's also seen me over a 100X in the store over the years buying my groceries here. Never a single high or hello from him either btw, after all these years of buying my groceries here, which is usually 10-20%+ HIGHER than Safeway.
Tonight I paid for my items and realized I forgot something, went back to check one of the aisles, decided not to buy anything else. So I proceeded to walk out with the groceries that he JUST SAW ME PAY FOR!!! Instead of saying have a good night or something friendly, he IMMEDIATELY gives me the DEATH STARE as I'm walking through the self checkout which I did purposely to let him know out of courtesy I didn't get anything else. Instead got treated like a mass murderer or convicted felon, I politely showed him my receipt even though he was being 1,000% rude & accusitory. Within seconds after looking at my receipt, he realized he was IN THE WRONG and immediately went SILENT. No apology. No remorse. No accountability. He instead handed me back my receipt, asked if I wanted a bag and I said nope! And walked out. What's shocking is this dude has seen me for years shop here, with my kids, with my girlfriend, with family ,and literally watched me pay for my groceries a minute earlier. So it makes no sense to be treated this way. But this is the type of customer service or lack thereof you get when you spend your hard earned money at Nob Hill Redwood Shores.
Ironically I'm sitting in front of the store right now writing this Yelp review about their rude employee and as I'm writing this I look up at their other employee collecting shopping carts outside who is busy giving dirty looks to customers walking in and out as he collects shopping carts! You can't make this stuff up!!!! I'm convinced everyone who works here hates their lives and hates working here, why else would you treat your customers this way???
There's also an older woman that works here sometimes in the self checkout that also gave me an annoying look not long ago for throwing way a few snacks I purchased from their store, quickly ate and threw in the trash that she already emptied out. Like really??? As I was attempting to walk out not realizing they closed one of the doors, I turned around to walk out the other door and she literally laughed / mocked me. One or two incidents I'm willing to let go, but literally 80% of the time I go in here any one of their employees is rude, hostile, or unfriendly.
Honestly, I don't think I've ever had a single positive experience here. And that's NO EXAGGERATION!!! That's literally the truth! From dealing with rude employees to purchasing expired meat! I once bought hamburger patties from this place for a summer barbecue only to realize that the patties I just bought from Nob Hill were expired for nearly a year! My family got sick that day from their expired food. Maybe if they spent more time making sure their foods aren't expired instead of terrorizing customers, this wouldn't happen.
The manager of this location should be ashamed of himself, ashamed of his employees, their performance, and should be reprimanded immediately. I don't blame the employees, I blame the manager and whoever trained them to think this type of behavior towards customers is okay. It's unprofessional and repulsive. I am reporting this incident as well as all the other incidents...

Bumped my 3 star up to 5 because: BAR ON SITE WITH LOCAL BEER and WINE. There. Forget the rest of the review, go enjoy Nob Hill now! Yay!
Plus: Floral good if you need a vase of flowers for work. Sushi amazingly good for a supermarket -- better than places I've eaten. Ceviche and Poke bar now. Burrito/taco bar. Other salad bars by weight so kind of expensive if you load up heavier items, though tasty! This store does all sorts of stuff besides groceries. A one-stop shop for errands and stuff. -Parking tip: mind the one-way directions, and find close places you drive past, go up the next row, then circle back and park, done. May the parking fairies bless you. Produce and wine/basic booze selection is decent (for a supermarket) though rum, whisky, and tequila selection a bit slim.
Con: Price is like everything else in Redwood Shores, a bit higher :-/ Layout is strange and counter-intuitive in places. Merchandiser people stock shelves and claim they don't work or know the store, like Nob Hill / Raleys contracts out. Good luck trying to find help.
Long version to follow...
Nob Hill is close to where I lay my head at night and has about everything. It presents itself as upscale -- call it "snob hill" -- but hey it's groceries, duh. I've been shopping here for years and they haven't changed much in that time.
Beware odd price-tags "buy 5 to get this price" where you pay more when buying 1 or 2 items - that's just sneaky.
Checkers are generally nice, though I often check myself out... I mean, not because I am so handsome, right, what I meant to say is I scan and bag my own groceries. Nob Hill promotes the idea and may as well say "Hey, I'm a human and this machine is taking my job, but use the machine so I can be obsolete soon!"
I don't use the deli but they always seem busy.
Whenever I see 1-star complainers I wonder if they just like to whine on yelp or had balls to ask the store for a fix, to good or bad results? Just sayin...
Love it or hate it,...
Read moreNob Hill is generally more expensive than the likes of Safeway. But I prefer to shop here because the location is convenient, and the selection of products just seems to keep getting better and better. I find stuff that I thought I'd only get at Whole Foods, like local organic free-range chicken (from Petaluma Poultry), Three Twins ice cream, Ecos laundry detergent, and South of France hand soap. They also have a very decent cheese and wine section. The rewards program is also more straightforward since it's like a cash-back + coupons program, compared to Safeway's which is confusing and requires more work. 4 things they need to improve on, though: 1) selection of fresh produce (sometimes they don't have fresh basil, french beans, or fresh peppers), 2) the Earthbound salad greens are sometimes close to their sell-by date, 3) the meat counter is often left unattended and it takes a while before someone comes to assist you, and 4) the vendors that stock the shelves can be rude to customers asking for help finding stuff. I understand that they don't work for Nob Hill, but it creates an unpleasant experience for customers...
