The chocolate-making class at Cocoa Flake is absolutely worth the cost! Disclaimer: the photos on this review are MY newbie creations - not the store owner’s! Denny’s are much more impressive. That being said, I was super happy with what I created in just a few hours as someone who has never done anything like this before. She had six of us in one class and we each got to take home 6 large chocolate hearts at the end of the day! Denny gave us numerous options for colors of cocoa butter to use in the molds, gave us tips and tricks for techniques for applying with different brushes, allowed us to use her air compressor to do an air brush technique, and was amazingly chill as we were all doing our own thing. She then allowed us to give an attempt at filling the molds and dumping the chocolate to create the shells (or did it for you if you wanted). She had many options for ganaches for us to fill our hearts, including cherry, banana, orange cream, vanilla, coffee, caramel, and passion fruit. She then did the hardest part for us in sealing the hearts, but talked us through the whole process while she did it. There were a couple moments during the class when we had to wait for chocolate to cool for 10-15 minutes, and we were able to eat snacks that we brought with us and ask all our questions about trying to make chocolates at home! Make sure you have on comfy shoes since you stand most of the time and you want to start out with a full belly since the class is several hours long! But this felt like the perfect level of complexity for anyone who has no experience but really wants to learn the process! You will learn why Cocoa Flake charges what they do, and have a whole new appreciation for the masterpieces that...
Read moreMy sister tipped me off about this place opening just up the road from me so I stopped by yesterday afternoon while out with my daughter. The shop is small and right now it seemed like the options were a variety of candy bars and bon bons. The bon bons are sold by the box size - six or twelve - and the bars are individual. I got: a salted caramel bar a spicy dark chocolate bar three spicy Mayan bonbons -three passion fruit bonbons -three cherry cheesecake bonbons -three pumpkin spice latte bonbons
And it was +/-$70. I would definitely say that this isn't a candy shop: this is a chocolatier. This is someone using really high quality ingredients to make very, very artful things. The cost felt high at first, but after actually trying it the quality is really obvious.
Everything looks amazing - these are truly beautiful chocolates and even how they reflect light is something I haven't really seen before. I wasn't sure how passion fruit and chocolate would taste together, but my wife and I agree that's probably our favorite of the bonbons now. The Mayan spice bonbon is excellent and tastes like a good Mayan hot chocolate, and the spicy dark chocolate bar has good bite to it.
It's pricey, but everything was even better than I expected, and given how beautiful all of the chocolates are that really is...
Read moreOmggggg!!! These are quite possibly the BEST freaking chocolates I've ever had. My bestie love love loves the White Dream Crunch bars but I'm a huge passionfruit lover and that bar absolutely hit the spot for me. The caramel chocolates were divine with the the right mix of chocolate to caramel and there wasn't a single bon bon I didn't devour with delight. I live in New Hampshire but will NOT order chocolate from anyone else. Cocoa Flake has the...
