Athens Cafe has really great gyros and Greek salads. The service has always been good too. However, the reason I gave it 2 stars is because I ordered a gyro and fries for pickup.
I pulled up the gentleman, I assume he's the manager was outside smoking a cigarette (which is fine no problem.) I walk past him talking to two ladies outside once he noticed that I was inside waiting to either place an order a pickup an order he came in.
My issue is the same gloves that he was outside using to smoke a cigarette with he used and rang up my order, proceeded to bag up my gyro & my fries and give me a cup for my drink.
In the time of covid right now cleanliness is expected. You shouldn't have to remind an establishment that serves food you do not bring the same gloves that you were smoking a cigarette outside with back inside to ring up your customer's food and use those same gloves to bag that food, I will not return.
I paid for the food, but I did not eat the food. I ended up tossing it out just because there's no telling what else he had been doing with those gloves. Very...
Read moreAll around solid restaurant for Mediterranean cuisine. The flavor and bang for buck factor here are hard to beat, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. The staff were friendly but the interior atmosphere was a bit dingy and outdated. The falafel were crispy and delicious, though lacked flavor compared to other falafel I’ve had. The hummus was rich and satisfying but a bit too runny. The star of the show was the Athena chicken, which was well-marinated, grilled to have a slight char, and very tender, juicy, and flavorful especially alongside the sautéed onions and banana peppers. The portion was enough for a full lunch and leftovers for dinner. The pecan pastry was also a standout item, notable for how sweet, flaky, and buttery it was. The chocolate almond roll was a bit dry, as if it had been out too long. Overall I think 4 stars for this place is very fair; I’ve had better, but I did not regret eating here. Some items were just okay,...
Read moreI knew I was in for a good time when I walked in. I had already placed a takeaway order over the phone (the most recent menu is the last two photos on the Google Listing), but my initial reaction was glee inside when I walked in. Total dive, in the best way. No one was really seated and staying, everyone was doing takeaway like me, but the guy at the counter was nice, the cook wasn't yelling his head off, the place was quiet and efficient. Definitely a welcome environment, seriously.
I got the souvlaki with fries, and my family each got large lamb-&-beef gyros. We also got onion rings, a couple orders of Spanakopita, falafel, and extra Hummus.
My God.
I am pleased. The gyros and souvlaki were all HUGE. Meaty. The spanakopita were huge slices. Tzakiki was perfect. Hummus with the onion rings was incredible. The souvlaki sauce was Hummus. Absolutely nuts. So good! Worth the cost, glad I tipped.
