I've been to a LOT of game stores across the Northeast United States, and this one by far irks me the most.
My husband paid so I didn't end up hearing the final price but he told me it later and I thought it was pretty high. We got a few small games and expansions along with a few used games and something we found in a kind of re-purposed, re-packaged bag that seemed pretty old school that he just liked the look of.
After doing some digging, I realized that the used games we purchased had almost no discount. In fact one of them seems to have been sold to us for a FAR higher price point than the publisher even set, despite it being out of box and pre-owned. I don't even know how that's possible.
They also had the balls to sell to us a 100 pack of role playing cards that perhaps has me the most mad as a consumer as I've maybe ever been. This is a set that was published in the late 70s that after some research, apparently collectors are really into, though we just got because it looked cool and we figured we'd find a use for them. But it's super misleading because printed on the cards themselves is a price for 100 cards, but it was the price from the 70s. So their store's price ($100 - yes they wanted $1 per card) is on the back of this strange, cloudy-looking bag where you can't see anything all that much anyways and at first glance, you think that $100 is actually just 100 COUNT, just reiterating it's for purchasing these 100 cards. Also if it was vintage collector edition of something that would be that expensive, why is just in this rando part of the store? Why is ANYBODY paying that much for this thing since they can see it for the price of $0 on the internet? So many questions, but I digress.
So I call the store, explain we are not local and it was a hefty drive for us to even get to this store in the first place and the girl on the phone could not be any more rude and dismissive. Just did not care one bit about my situation. She told me she can't do anything unless she has the product in hand to return, so I can't even mail it back to issue a return. Which again, doesn't make a ton of sense since they already sold the product to me and I currently own it after their piss poor packaging and the more I think of it, maybe misleading and placed in a weird part of the store on purpose.
ANYWAYS, at a time when it's all too easy to order a game directly from the publisher or buy it at a Con, or this little thing called Amazon, small mom and pop board game shops are in trouble, so I want to support them as much as I can. You would think they would do everything they could to provide excellent customer service to customers who patronize their store. With this place, you would be wrong.
I should think it obvious, but I will not be back (with the exception of my long drive to get my $100 back from overpriced cards I don't collect in the...
Read moreI debated whether or not it was even worth writing this and I waited two weeks to make sure I was thinking logically. I have been going to this store on and off for almost 20 years. It’s often been a mixed bag but after this last incident I will never be back. I was at a Friday Night Magic event with my wife and my 16 year old daughter. It’s one of the only times we can get out of the house together and it lets my kid socialize and work on her anxiety in a comfortable environment. This particular night, the matchmaking software was acting up (apparently a regular occurrence?) who cares, we’re all friends and acquaintances here to hang out. No big deal. This was apparently a very big deal to the store owner. She stormed over and yelled at us as though it were our fault that the software was glitchy and even yelled directly at my kid when she was trying to clarify what was going on. It was very traumatic for my child and enraging for my wife and I. We tried to finish out the event but ended up dropping and leaving after that round. This comes on the heels of many other minor incidents like having rules questions answered rudely as if me, a mere player, should know as much as an officially sanctioned judge. In my many years of experience in customer service I would not ever deign to treat guests in my store so poorly. If anything, the right thing to do is apologize for the software not working and nicely ask everyone to start over. No one would have cared. There are 6-7 places to go for Magic events within 20 minutes of my house. I went to this store because it was close and I was nostalgic for when I would go here in my early 20s almost every day. My family and I have spent many thousands of dollars here as regulars over the years and all of that is done. This was shocking and depressing. I was sick to my stomach for days.
Additionally, there are plenty of local brick and mortar small businesses with better pricing, wider variety of inventory, that still sell magic singles, and won’t treat you like you have somehow offended them by trying to spend moneys at...
Read moreI had the worst retail experience of my life here. Tables are cluttered and my son set a pack of cards on a table, and a fully grown "man" came out of the back and yelled at him claiming it was his space. I addressed with staff and rather than ensure a safe environment for children, they defended him. Maybe he was staff or a family friend...he was a creepy coward. When I turned to him to address him directly, they threatened police so I went to the station and filed a complaint of my own. The clientele there are more than the staff and the ownership deserve. Shame on them.
Update
You can go to the police; you can call the mayor, you can file a petition, you can pen the state legislature, you can write congress. It doesn't matter, I will always protect my son. Again, the issue is that a fully grown man addressed my son and I will NEVER tolerate that. Not ever. Before I confronted the man, I approached the cashier and addressed the issue with the staff with the intention of peaceful resolution. I hoped they might speak to the man so I wouldn't have to. Instead, the cashier degraded my son - something else that I will not tolerate. Not ever. Had I been approached about my son setting something down in the wrong place, I would have spoken to my son about it. But I will not allow you or anyone else to speak disrespectfully to him. I will correct you before you will correct him, that's my job; I'm his father. Had that man put his hands on my son, the situation would've been much worse. I don't ever want that. Instead, I want you to do what respectful people normally do; address the parents rather than the children. Especially a business owner. Should you fail to address the parent, if that cannot be achieved, I expect you to set the standard in your business - children will be protected at all times and addressed with respect. They can be parented by their parents. That creep should've been tossed to set the tone for...
