GAP, Pennsylvania: Find Pepe Saya Cultured Butter available at The Town Clock Cheese Shoppe, serving cheese & dairy for over 80 years. #pennsylvania #gap #lancaster #butter #pepesaya #love #cheese

Finding this Shoppe was like finding a true diamond in the rough. It's an experience. You travel in place. The moment you walk up to the door you feel you are already heading into something amazing with the beautiful landscaping and flowers. Once you step in, you realize it's truly authentic. I enjoyed pleasant conversations with other customers who were excited to tell me about how good the cheese is and I sampled a piece myself. Then I experienced a surprising journey around the world of cheeses! Absolutely sensational! I wish I didn't live so far away but I'm so glad we drove past it and then circled back on our way home! I learned a lot and I brought home some delicious cheeses that I'm still enjoying!! If I'm ever in the area again, I'm definitely going back.

Bill, a third generation cheese merchant, is as knowledgeable about cheese as about the rich history of Gap-in-the-Hills, now called Gap. A real old-time shop, steeped in history, with old pictures telling a story of how Bill's dad and his dad did business way back! Here are two conversation starters: Bill, tell me about "gras" kaas from Holland and "Bill, tell me about the history of the town clock. Was it really hidden in a cave?"

Bill Houder is the owner of this establishment and is the second generation cheese-monger, possibly third, in his family. If you want to know anything about cheese... this is the place to go!!

Bill will take you on a cheese trip around the world while you're there. All you have to do is listen in and hold out your hand (palm up) if you want to participate. He'll tell you all about the origins of the cheese, (while you're enjoying the piece he's dropped into your hand) where it's from, interesting tidbits about it, if it has a salt shot start or finish, if it's a blue cheese whether it's sharp or creamy, how to best use it, and which other cheeses best compliment it if building a cheese tasting tray, etc... The man knows his cheeses! Just let him know if you'd like to take some of that deliciousness home with you while he's cutting it.

Tasty, educational and FUN...a trip to Bill's shoppe is always an experience worth the drive. Bill is a teacher, showman, and an entertainer all wrapped up in one. Plan on spending some time here, at least 30 minutes, if you can. It's time well spent!

Bill is also available for private cheese tasting parties at the shop for groups of people outside store hours. Gift Certificates are also available. I hope you enjoy Bill and his cheeses as much as I do!! He's a...

A lovely little gem with a charming atmosphere and incredible selection from someone clearly passionate about what they do. The unparalleled service here is great for the seasoned turophile and the beginner looking to branch out. Bill, a lifelong cheesmonger, will offer advice, samples, guidance and suggested uses for every one of the carefully selected and lovingly tended cheeses in his quaint shop. I travel an hour and a half to patronize his establishment and fill my private stock each month and it is worth it every time. I get all my favorites as well as several new and exciting things each time. My palette is never bored. The prices are as good as or better than what you’d pay at your local grocer for a far superior product. And Bill never lets me leave without getting something special for my spouse. Such a thoughtful gesture, extending his care beyond the counter to ensure everyone is happy. My only regret is that I could not give this place more...

I have been wanting to stop here for years and I'm so glad the store was open on a day I had extra time in my travel through Gap! This store is in the lower level of the building, accessible by just a few steps down from the small lot between the building and the street. The proprietor is helpful, very friendly, and makes the shopping experience memorable. Cubes of the "cheese of the day" are set out for tasting. The hand-motion activated toothpick dispenser is both sanitary and high-tech. But the shop and the owner harken back to an older time when sellers specialized in a particular product. They were lifelong students of their wares and highly valued for their knowledge. I had a great experience and am very happy with my cheese selections. I'll have to make trips to Gap specificially for this store instead of trying to catch it on an open day when I happen to be...
