Just had the worst customer experience with this place I've ever had in my entire life. I called in advance to make sure I wouldn't waste my time but because the owner isn't truthful in what was said to me I ended up doing so. I called and asked if they buy pokemon singles in which they told me they do. I also asked if they have any sort of limitations on how much they would buy to which they told me no. That they would pick only the cards they would be interested in out of my collection. They said they bought cards at a strict 60% tcgplayer value which I had no issue with so I proceeded to bring my collection to them to sell. I arrived and brought in all my cards which were all hits and a friendly employee began to pick through my collection and pulled out cards to purchase. The owner then walked up and asked me if I had a number I'd like to give to part with the entire collection for and gave me a offer for everything. I told him I wasn't comfortable selling my entire collection for a number as I didn't have a value of what everything was worth combined. He proceeded to inform me that it would be far too costly for him to pay his employee to sit and go through my collection and price out the cards that they'd pick to purchase and that my only option was to sell my collection blindly for a number or nothing at all. This was shocking to me because it completely contradicts what I was told over the phone. I told him I understood it was an hour before closing and I'm sure it was a long day as Prismatic Evolutions was released so I'm sure they were tired and ready to close up. So I offered to come back at a more convenient time for them when they would have more time to do so but the owner quickly refused and told me that he believed if I went home that I would pick out cards from the collection to try and get some sort of best deal. The offer was then and there and if not I should go somewhere else like Pokehive or Pure Joy Toys. He also claimed that if I were to go anywhere else that nobody would be willing to do the labor of going through my collection and pick out the cards they'd want to purchase and that they'd all simply throw a blind offer at me as well. So i quickly corrected him and informed him I indeed had already done so and Pure Joy Toys was kind enough to sit and go though my entire collection, price everything they wanted from it out and give me a offer. He responded saying "Oh, well now that I know I'm getting sloppy seconds I'm probably just going to pass altogether." So basically telling me that simply because I've sold part of my collection to someone prior to selling to them that now somehow my cards are no good for them. Completely unprofessional altogether. I'm leaving this review to inform anyone of how the owner does business. I called ahead to avoid this kind of situation and even though over the phone I was very clear about the size of my collection I was told there was "no budget" or no limitation as to how much they would be willing to buy but once my cards were in the store it seemed the owner was only willing to buy everything blindly or nothing at all. It's sad to think if I would've only brought in part of my collection they would've taken the time to "pay an employee" to go through and price out the cards they'd want and give me an offer but because of the amount of cards I brought in total it changed how they do business entirely. Not only did the owner try to make bold claims by saying that nobody else would be willing to look through my cards and pick what they'd buy and give me an offer (which is exactly what they claimed they do over the phone) but even proceeded to tell me after I told them another store had already done so that my collection is now considered "sloppy seconds" and not worth the time to look at, even though one of his employees had already picked out a good 20 cards that would be a great addition for them. If you're looking for a place to sell your cards avoid this place like the plague. Literally anywhere else in town is...
Read moreAttention: There are MUCH better hobby/card shops in town that deserve your money (see Sportscards plus and/or LegendsOnly).
Here's why - 1. They're unethical. Owner and/or team members will search packs for the "hits" and remove them when it suits them, as well as buy in and sabotage their breaks (see CJ Stroud Black Pandora Downtown their employee hit in their recent break), and generally mislead you when you're expecting employees of their makeshift business to be decent and honest.
Don't bring your sports cards in expecting to get 'cashed out' fairly. Bottom line here; they'll pay you 60% of what it's worth on a good day, really 50% if we're being honest about it. They're also not cash heavy, so don't expect them to compensate even you remotely fairly for your higher value items.
Final Thoughts: At the end of the day, here's what you have here. A bunch of slimeball hacks. The guy bought himself a job and opened this store without having a clue about business, and that's apparent. It's funny, just so sad you can't bring yourself to laugh. Are you going sell your gold kaboom, charizard 1st ed. or vintage grails to a place like run by amateurs in ninja turtle t-shirts?
Come on. Save your time, energy, and money and go somewhere and be treated like a pro. Sportscardsplus in San Antonio has been in business for 35 years and is an expert with integrity and knowledge. LegendsOnly is a newer shop that specializes in innovation and customer needs.
Boomtown is, unfortunately, BOOM CLOWNS. Stay aware from this flea market garage sale experience...
Read moreI’d like to take the time to give a huge shoutout to this store. Months ago my storage unit was broken into. Countless items were stolen from me, including a huge lot of Lamelo Ball collectibles, and a huge box of Bowman MLB Mega boxes. The thieves took my items and sold them to Boomtown card shop. The SAPD were notified and a case was made but they strait up told me that they were busy and my case was likely to never be solved.
I reached out to card shops across town to see if the thieves tried selling my items, and sure enough they went to Boomtown. The owner Vic immediately notified me he had my stolen cards. Vic even gave me photos of the two thieves who stole my stuff and we were able to identify one of the crooks. (Still haven’t been caught)
Vic then gave me back all my Bowman Mega Boxes and asked for no money in return. ( I know he lost money) at the time selling these boxes was my main source of income. He had no idea how much he helped me. I gave him a bundle of different boxes in return for my boxes. I felt horrible.
This store and the ownership have a special place in my heart. When the world turns ugly there are still good people in this world. Thank you Boomtown and Vic!! Best card shop in...
